My other Fediverse account is @jt7d@mastodon.social, and I guess any AWS posts of mine will be over there since awscommunity.social will shut down Feb 28th.

AWS's Twitch schedule has dwindled away to nothing: twitch.tv/aws/schedule Does anyone know what's up?

OK, well, there's the first time I've almost accidentally terminated the wrong instance because of the new EC2 console's scrollbars, but I bet it's not the last.

The time has come again for my favorite Christmas meme.

"they *used to* laugh and call him names"

(won't be playing anymore reindeer games now, will they?)

A mall Christmas display showing Rudolf the red nosed reindeer in the air and all the other reindeer on the ground.

It kinda seems like maybe Rudolf killed them all. But probably they have just not put the rest of the reindeer up yet. Rudolf looks stone cold and determined.

@Quinnypig Saw a lot of those on stage this week, so maybe this is effectively a peek ahead, in case you're desperate to know next October which customer execs will be on-stage at re:Invent.

Here we go again, AWS folks! Thank you for all your hard work this year, and I'm eagerly waiting to see the announcements of what you accomplished! I hope you get some time off next week, but... yeah, I know how "week before announcement" is probably going.

Looks like I'll be posting my AWS #reInvent 2024 content over on:

bsky.app/profile/esh.dev

If you're new to Bluesky, here are a couple "starter packs" you can follow to kick off with content from folks in and near AWS:

I'm almost proud, my CloudFormation stack is in a state with 39 capital letters and 5 underscores, it's come so far 😍

I thought Cloud9 worked very well for AWS workshops, and just in general for providing a very pre-configured interactive environment. I wonder what they'll do about all the workshops that use it.

Is it true that cloning an Aurora database really only requires permissions to use its KMS key, and DescribeDBClusters on it? Are people out here granting DescribeDBClusters:* and using the aws/rds key? There's no "rds:read db data" permission required?

Yo, mandatory security training video at work, NIST SP 800-63b section 5.1.1.2 Memorized Secret Verifiers: "Verifiers SHOULD NOT require memorized secrets to be changed arbitrarily (e.g., periodically)."

And also, there's NO SUCH THING as identity theft! That's a dodge by corps to shift risk to individuals -- the corp got frauded and is taking YOUR money to cover THEIR loss!!!

And yes, if they took the loss, there'd be more hassle and less fraud. But I realize the ship has sailed anyway.

I'm a little curious about how AWS treat the employees who are running the services for which they've announced EoL. I hope they aren't disadvantaged, because that'd be unfair, they'd likely bail before EoL, and it'd impact other services whose employees might now feel they're in a riskier place.

Heeyyyyy, I've seen the "Actions, resources, and condition keys" docs for various services, but I hadn't ever run across this top-level index page for _all_ of them: docs.aws.amazon.com/service-au Bookmarked, of course, given how often I'm looking up IAM stuff across multiple services.

I hope that any "serverless" services that AWS announce at re:Invent will be able to scale to zero, even if the last increment requires an "OK to go completely to sleep" / "Please wake up, I'm going to trigger load" pair of APIs. (And yeah of course, ongoing storage costs and maybe need reserved capacity for "please wake up" to succeed in all circumstances.)

@Quinnypig Medicines. I forget most of the machines and the details, but our internal license server ended up running on "viagra". Lots of laughs, very funny... and then we constantly had license renewal attempts getting dropped and blocked 🤦‍♀️

I'm starting a little for-fun Django project this weekend, and decided to try #uv. Holy smokes it's fast and smooth so far, am I the last one to discover this?

@brianleroux I still maintain that S3 is the only real datastore, all the rest are just different formats of cache.
