I'm told that GIFs (particularly of TV show the The Office) are passé in various contextual uses. Yet they find their way into my teaching decks and they always make me smirk. And by find I mean I put them there, on purpose, much to the shrieks of my teenage twins saying nooooooooo

A set of slides for a doctorate research methods course reviewing AMJ editors notes on Methods and Findings sections, showing the text "REVIEWERS BE REVIEWIN’, These sections are more critical in a QUAL paper than you may appreciate" alongside an animated GIF of actor Rainn Wilson spinning in a chair with a red short wig as character Dwight Schrute in the American television show, The Office.

Surprised to see the faint pink glow of aurora through the clouds (Central Valley, California); one helluva of storm!

While cleaning a storage room, our staff found this tape containing #UNIX v4 from Bell Labs, circa 1973

Apparently no other complete copies are known to exist: gunkies.org/wiki/UNIX_Fourth_E

We have arranged to deliver it to the Computer History Museum

#retrocomputing

An old reel to reel magnetic tape. It has a label, in Jay Lepreau's handwriting, proclaiming it to be "UNIX Original from Bell Labs v4 (see manual for fmt)"

@cdevroe Yeaaa, it's a shame really; I don't have a lot of the pack film left in my refrigerator, but at this point I've worked through the last of my 2015 packs and I'm down to my 2019's. Won't buy more; the pricing is outrageous (even if doing neg recovery)

Shooting persimmons turned into a bit of a travail; lost the last three shots of a pack of FP-100C to failure (a first; I've never had the tab pulls fail, but that pack was 10 years old), and lost a sheet of FP4 to a film holder failure (film popped and the slide crushed it; I must have loaded it poorly). I did persist, and photographs were indeed made. 😂

A 4x5 camera with red bellows fully extended extended, pointed at a small persimmon tree in a large green field, it's branches exploding with deep green leaves and ripened orange fruit. The camera is ready to shoot, with a Polaroid packfilm back in placed and a long red shutter release cable extending from the front shutter.

Took the twins and their friend to see Laufey in concert last week, and just amazing show for a first tour. Great opener (Suki Waterhouse), crowd was amazing, girls had such a great time. Incredibly talented (her cello and piano playing is just lovely).

@Alice as the driver of a pack of wild Swifties I am deeply offended and you will be hearing from a response track on the next album in 6 months about this. I am now being told to stop at the next Sephora to ease their pain, please send help

A little FP-100c instant film of our ever-surprising passion fruit plant (which has decided to flower again, this time in bulk); too stark a dynamic range for my now aging instant film but I thought why not. I believe the black and white film will come out more to my liking (a few holders of FP4); better multiple flower compositions as well. We shall see.

The apple trees have done well this year, and after a morning wander-and-pick, it was time for a Dutch Apple Baby bake. The twins tell me this is my best version yet; only took me three years to sort it.

In a cast iron pan, a mixture of flour, eggs, sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and salt, a dash of baking power , and a splash of milk combined with butter and fresh apples from our trees baked at 400 degrees for 25 or so minutes results in a rising array of golden apple slices better known as a Dutch Apple Baby

One of the more ridiculous things I recently added to the darkroom was a $3 dollar yard sale findl red outdoor safety light I tied into the safelight switch. If the red light is on, I'm printing, don't open the door.

Did I need this? No. Does it make me happy? Absolutely.

An outdoor red safety light shining bright red on the outside of the darkroom, letting people know not to open the door.

The twins had a birthday party this weekend; 19 thirteen and fourteen year olds (we survived). They decided laser tag across the property was the way to go and I can never find the stupid weird jack size cables for these charge bases. Nothing a soldering iron and some broken USB cables can't fix.

A laser tag gun charge base open, showing the charging circuit with a hotwired USB plug attached to allow charging since I can never find the weird barrel jack plug for these things.

CBS Mornings talks to Sally Mann. Interesting story. Her current work is playing with the Sabattier effect, exposing negatives to light during development. She notes that it’s unpredictable. Having tried this recently, that made me feel better, because I couldn’t predict results either.

Frameworkists are eager to tell you about the name-brand tech they're using on the project, then put a Miele oven in the bathroom. Do not be a frameworkist. Do not _hire_ frameworkists.

Be someone who is agnostic to tools but laser focused on goals.

@leaverou @wollman color me suspicious; coding (be it open or axial) and calcing CA for inter-rater is not just about agreeing but also the disagreement. Researchers debate and review and collect more data and subsequently what emerges is stronger research findings/theory development. I would hesitate to equate text analysis from an LLM with the coding one does to understand the experiences and perspectives of participants, to do more than just describe (a very Charmaz approach at that).
