40+ German living in Germany 🇩🇪🇪🇺, pronouns he/they, posting about nerd stuff (sci-fi in movies, TV, and games) & sometimes politics (green politics, eco-socialism, solarpunk). Oh and #TransRights are human rights. Achtung: kann Spuren von #Deutsch enthalten!

@mrsjmccrimmon @oomoepoo While Clara and Missy went looking for the Doctor, he was just chilling across time and space at various music festivals.
The Twelfth Doctor at Glastonbury #DoctorWho
@aoanla That was the weird thing: it was nostalgia but leaned so much into obscure nerdism (sorry Sutekh!) that only the lore nerds understood what was going on—and rightly pointed out that none of that made any sense lore-wise.
But my point was more that we got teased and ultimately none of that tease was culminating in an interesting story. Both finales could've worked just as well (or bad) without Suthek, Omega or the Rani. It was just empty calories.
Lucasfilm should give this man a #StarWars trilogy and don't interfere.
I'm really excited for the #EldenRing movie, #AlexGarland knows his stuff! With Ex Machina and Annihilation, he made two of my fav sci-fi movies of the last ten years.
Weitersagen! Das #Deutschlandticket gilt im Sommer in der Région Grand Est in Frankreich. Für alle unter 28 Jahren aus #BaWü. Fahrten bis Paris sind möglich. Saarland und Rheinland-Pfalz machen auch mit.
About #DoctorWho and the era that just ended:
1. Gatwa had the makings of a brilliant Doctor, but his Doctor was misaligned: who was the 15th Doctor actually?
2. Reinvention w/o handrails: while I applaud RTD for doing novel, inventive stuff, there was no onboarding for casual nostalgia food viewers...
3. ...who got baited with nostalgia that ultimately had no pay-off (Sutekh, Omega, the Rani).
4. Unclear broadcast model: is it a Sat Night Event or a streaming show? Pick one and run with it.
@mekkaokereke Right on! Putting bodies on the streets is just one aspect, politics has to pick up that momentum and do something with it. So I guess the US Dems are now in full swing, using all they have in the playbook, from the federal down to the communal level. Oh. No.
Happy Birthday to Carole Ann Ford who turns 85 today.
So, I've just read that J. Michael Straczynski is moving to Europe, to the UK to be precise. Nothing to see here. #DoctorWho
@nico198X Definitely. He is throwing curveballs to drive the story forward, as fast as possible so that audiences have no time to think about them. It's all fine entertainment in the moment, but if you want to engage an audience over time, it just feels like a waste. What was all that snow and Ruby Sunday? Nothing. What was it with Belinda and her Anglican Marine ancestor? Who cares. Why did Susan show up? Pffff.
Just ask yourself: who was the 15th Doctor? What's his character, his motivation, his weak points, his biggest glory? You can answer that for all Doctors more or less but for 15 it all falls a bit flat. And I'm afraid even with a third season that might not have changed unless other people were allowed to write the character (hint: Inua Ellams). It seriously baffles me that the show is now exactly where it was after the Chibnall era ended.
@nico198X RTD. That's why. He is writing the show all energy and movement, zero sense and pay-off.
RTD has also shown that he cannot do the show justice anymore. It's all energy and kinetics, but that's it. Everything is wished away in the end, there is no pay-off, it's a sledgehammer to your face and the story. It's not clever writing, it's not subversion, it's just plainly stupid now. I seriously don't know how the show can move on from that unless he let's someone else run the ship.
And don't talk to me about the companions. Ruby was... fine, especially after the second season (which should've been Belinda's season) and Milly Gibson did some fantastic acting. But Belinda was absolutely wasted and sidelined over and over again. Varada Sethu had such interesting set-up in the first episode of s2—but then everything fell apart and the end was downright horrible.
After some long thoughts about #DoctorWho and Ncuti Gatwa's two seasons, I am now convinced that 15 was ultimately an undercooked concept for a Doctor that rarely shined—and this was all due to RTD's writing and general direction for the show. There are only two episodes where the Doctor (Gatwa himself) truly excels and shows character: "Boom" and "Story and the Engine". There were good episodes, not to discount them, but overall? Dang this was absolutely underwhelming.
@Phangurl All of it: Cons, TV shows, etc. Just think what an impact Whittaker's message in the cupboard during Covid had.
The sad thing about Ncuti Gatwa's time on #DoctorWho: he wasn't really able to "be" the Doctor in real life like e.g. Jodie Whittaker.
