Our repository services are based on the #opensource #DSpace platform (dspace.org/), the development of which relies on the work done by the global DSpace community.

A new major version of the software, DSpace 9.0, was just released on Friday: wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC

We are still in the process of upgrading our services to the previous version, DSpace 8.1, which came out in February, so it's going to us take a while before we get to digest the features of this new release!

@Rowena @scottish I used to be involved with the #OpenRepositories conferences, so I maybe biased, but I would like to second the recommendation.

This year's conference is held on location in Chicago, but OR2026 will be an online event. The Call for Proposals is likely to be posted at some point in the fall.

The presentations from the most recent conferences are available at Zenodo:

Invest in Open Infrastructure (#IOI, @investinopen) makes an important point in its new report:
investinopen.org/state-of-open

"Imagine just a few of the major open infrastructures serving scholarship today: #arXiv, #PubMed, #DSpace, #OpenJournalSystems, or perhaps #CreativeCommons…Consider how many of these have been created on a cycle of grants and sustained on a combination of donations, membership fees, service hosting, and/or specialized development…Most scholars, teachers, and researchers…accept them as a given and depend on them…But these infrastructures are not, on the whole, sustainable businesses with robust fiscal models and diversified revenues. Many do not turn profits; most operate at steady losses that are absorbed by philanthropic and government funders and a variety of research institutions including labs, universities, and colleges. They operate on systems rife with technical debt, and they depend upon volunteer labour to cover much of their human costs from governance to editorial review to code development."

thecrimson.com/article/2025/5/

"The Trump administration revoked Harvard’s ability to enroll international students [today]…effective immediately…Harvard currently hosts more than 6,000 international students…The announcement comes just one week before thousands of international students at Harvard are set to graduate…In a press release, [Department of Homeland Security Secretary #KristiNoem] announced that current international students must 'transfer or lose their legal status.'"

Kas näin... Google korvasi hakutulokset tekoälykoosteilla Suomessakin

Vuosi sitten Google otti käyttöön tekoälykoosteet hakutulostensa alussa Yhdysvalloissa ja laajensi käytäntöä pikkuhiljaa muihinkin maihin. Tänään oli Suomen vuoro.

Samaan aikaan saatiin ulos tutkimus, jonka mukaan Google lähettää liikennettä verkkosivuille merkittävästi aiempaa vähemmän - koska tekoälykooste riittää isolle osalle käyttäjistä.

I don't want to "talk" to my browser. I don't want my browser to "summarize" things. I don't want my browser to "help" me with things. I don't want my browser to do anything except show me web pages and shut the fuck up and get out of the way.

Seems like the logical conclusion of this "generative AI" exercise.

"“My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. Why wouldn’t she? Rarely did she sit in class and not see other students’ laptops open to ChatGPT. Toward the end of the semester, she began to think she might be dependent on the website.

Science is under attack. In a new Upstream post "The resilience of open science in times of crisis" @jeroenbosman and I detail current events around 5 types of threats, show how scientists and others are pushing back, and we propose a resilience model to better safeguard scientific communities, individuals and open infrastructures.

We argue that open science might be both more vulnerable and more resilient. doi.org/10.54900/pqrcx-8d019 #openscience #resilience #DefendResearch #academicfreedom

This is connecting some dots, but plausibly I think -- there are reports of Capitol Hill security turning away the Trump/DOGE people this morning after they tried to enter the Copyright Office. The Director of the Copyright Office was just "fired" the day after a report about Copyright and Artificial Intelligence was released (Friday).

r @Acyn Reporter: The president fired the librarian of congress. Why?

Leavitt: There were concerning things she had done at the library of congress in the pursuit of D.E.I. And putting inappropriate books in the library for children.

~ Nathan Strang @NavyStrang The Library of Congress gets a copy of every book published in the United States, print or digital. It's part of how Copyright is established. Itis a RESEARCH library, not one where kids go to check out books.

I've been a doomer about DOGE data grabbing, but I'll admit it never occurred to me Musk could fire his way to stealing all copyrighted material ever

WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25), the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, issued this statement after Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, Shira Perlmutter, was fired earlier today by President Trump – days after he fired now-former Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden:

“Donald Trump’s termination of Register of Copyrights, Shira Perlmutter, is a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis. It is surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp
Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.

Just taking a moment in my laboratory this afternoon, staring at this investment of my time and love, and taxpayer dollars, and wondering what will become of the USian scientific enterprise as we cede our role in the world.

My little piece of the USian scientific enterprise. A small laboratory about 7 meters by 5 meters, packed with equipment. In the right front, you see green compressed gas bottles, across from that in the left bottom there is an isotope ratio mass spectrometer, and there is a homemade vacuum line and pyrolysis system set up across the background. You cannot see the fume hood and analytical balances tucked in behind the vacuum separations line. Fluorescent light fixtures line the ceiling.
