My son told me he was awarded the Leslie Neilson badge at school. I asked “What's that?” He said, “It's a big building with lots of kids, but that's not important right now.”
The enormous old #trans woman you often see around #Carlton, the CBD and all the quality #Melbourne inner suburbs. You can't miss me; I look like the love child of Eleanor Bron and Wilfred Brambell. Stop me and say hi.
Penniless economist and inactive activist.
There's many a good tune played on an old fiddle.

Today was #Melbourne Cup Day public holiday one of the many public holidays in Australia that is considered a bad reason to have a celebration.
The only worthy public holiday is Labour Day and that's suspiciously not on May 1st, but is always on a Monday so it gives a long weekend, but it also receives relatively little fanfare.
I think it would be good for social cohesion to get some more public holidays to celebrate things that are important to all of us.
Perhaps something like Medicare Day!
I went out to do the shopping yesterday and couldn't work out why Melbourne was so packed with people in the middle of the afternoon.
Annual horse cruelty celebration day.
I love not having anything to do with mainstream media, and being free to wander about blissfully ignorant of stupid traditions.
@Dawn Just remember I thought the world of you when you were still niche.
@oloturia Plus teflon is just bad in every way. Poisonous for all of us:

Also it's easier, cheaper, and healthier to build up your arm muscles by giving your long-lasting stainless steel cookware a good scrub.
My wife @zoandbehold.bsky.social in NY Mag today!!!
The 1977 Coleco Telstar Arcade answered a design question that amazingly no one had asked before -
"What if a game console looked like a Wild West take on the TARDIS console?"

Please just let me type in the year I was born. No more scrolling. We don’t have to keep doing this to each other...
Interesting piece about how much effort it takes to get Gary Oldman's character Jackson Lamb to look as dishevelled as he does in the TV series Slow Horses. Fun read.

@tregeagle I don't know if I've ever had an alarm go off before I've noticed the smoke. It only serves the purpose of upsetting me further when I'm already annoyed (with myself).
@johnquiggin One concern I have is that it's a blunt instrument, and a one-off fix for pathological dynamics that (assuming it works) can always re-emerge. Another is that everybody's improved financial position is an opportunity to re-leverage, if not in housing then perhaps in some other speculative bubble, because we've been told by government for decades that this is the prudent thing to do.
Still waiting for my ADHD exemption from keeping a smoke alarm. If I find it irritating, my neighbours must be really annoyed. All the smoke, running around opening windows, and flapping tea towels is taxing enough without adding an ear-splitting screech into the mix.
The old lady who lives in my mirror looks fricking awful tonight.
@tregeagle Full story to follow; I'm done for the evening. TL;DR: Australia is too big, and Canberra is waste of space as a statement of national purpose.
It invokes horizontal vertigo. But it reinforces the message that Australia will be girt by nothing except sea and Colorbond steel fencing.
Which of course is the story for the rest of the green bits on the Eastern side of the country. But Canberra seems to be the futuristic model for the suburban hell the rest of us were raised in.
Never leaving Melbourne again. Not even for a few days. Inner North Melbourne, that is. Within 10km of my front door. Five if I'm feeling delicate.

Guess who has a 6-hour train trip followed by 3 hours on a coach today. Oh. joy!
At least I get to talk to a roomful of strangers about interesting things tomorrow.
