@rickf You were way ahead of your time! In high school, I could never fathom a portable... until 1993, when I was given my 1st work laptop - an insanely expensive 486 Color LCD IBM Thinkpad. (The thing was so rugged, it could deflect bullets.) I'd carry that thing around like a nerd status symbol in Silicon Valley. Fellow geeks would crowd around me because of the beautifully bright display alone. I think it has 1.5hr of battery life. 🤪

@rickf @kdriscoll I had an old public domain game called SPACEWAR.EXE (yes, that same space war) that was written in Assembly and fit into a nice, neat 22K executable.

I had a tool that would reassemble applications into .COM file which was usually more efficient on disk space & after conversion, the whole damn game - graphics, sound, controls, animations - fit into a 9K .COM file.

Back then. 13K of storage mattered giving rise to SQ.EXE & ultimately the ARC/ZIP wars.

@rickf @kdriscoll Right? It's all relative I suppose. (I cried w/ joy when the 256K chip was invented.) Before the 5.25", I worked with 8" floppies for a CPM machine my friend had & thought the 180K/360K 5.25" was SOOO SMALL. 😁

Then the 1.2MB HD 5.25" floppy came out & as a poor 12yo, I couldn't afford either the HD media or the drive. (I dumpster dived businesses to get "discarded" 5.25" floppies.)

Then the 3.5" 1.44MB floppy arrived & I thought HOW COULD DISKS POSSIBLY GET ANY BETTER?!? 🤪

@rickf @kurtsh @kdriscoll I was never a Mac guy but prior, I adored the Apple II. That was a true hobbiest's computer & what launched me into my PC tinkering. (Like overclocking my 8088 from 4.77mhz to 7.4mhz)

Remember punching a notch into the sides of floppies so you could flip them over for Apple II titles?
