One of the funniest things in Warframe remains, to me, Octavia.

For those not in the know, Octavia is a wholly music based frame. Her powers are all around music, and you can set up songs yourself! But, her idle is basically jamming in place, sometimes lifting her hands over her head while she dances

This idle runs constantly.

Even in emotional moments in the story.

Character crying over his lost husband, telling you the story? Octavia is breaking it down right in front of him. Trying to fight off something so eldritch it wears every face but its own? Octavia is going full Daft Punk while raining destruction on it. The last of an ancient family is sending you into a land utterly overcome by a hive mind thing? She's dropping the bass.

Just savage.

@Epic_Null This is a replicator pattern of theseus issue, here - remember, it isn't just stored as offal in the system. It's reduced to a sort of base matter that can then be rematerialized as whatever you like. By this same logic, you're also eating plates and forks and knives when you're eating replicated food.

By your notion, *nothing* is vegan, because of the simple fact of how lifecycles work. Everything contains at least a few molecules that were at some point in the near or distant past part of an animal.

2025-06-16

@trochee Cmdr. Gordon has a reputation for yelling at his black jacket culinary team when things are cooked poorly.

"Come on, program that replicator right the first time! Captain Mendez' stew deserves better than that!"

2025-06-16

Hot take:

All food out of the replicator in Star Trek is vegan. *All food.*

Replicated hamburger? Vegan. That T bone you just requested? Vegan. Your beef chili with bacon bits and turkey giblets? If it was replicated, it was vegan.

Considering the federation's advanced technology around modelling outcomes and such, you can't tell me the computer can't, essentially, simulate how muscle tissue reacts to being cooked.

The alternative, which I kinda want to write a story around, now, is that there's a group within the Federation (culinary cultural exchange?) whose only job is to find the best cooks from each culture they encounter, and have them cook the dish so they can feed it to the replicator's molecular scanners and print it, albeit at a lower resolution, endlessly.

That last bit, for the record, is why replicated food is almost universally considered not quite as good as the real thing.

@CWilbur Considering he added literally nothing to the plot?

His omission was absolutely no surprise.

Just a reminder, but if you're writing a campaign and worried you have a shitty NPC, consider:

Tom. Fucking. Bombadil, from LOTR.

Tom Bombadil, who showed up, sang a few songs, put on the One Ring, basically said "Huh, that's neat", before giving The Ring back and moving on.

Tom Bombadil, who, later, was briefly considered as ringbearer, before Gandalf essentially said the asshole would take the ring, put it up on his hearth, and *completely forget about it.*

If Tolkein can get away with Bombadil, you can get away with your NPC.

(If you haven't guessed, I really hate Bombadil.)

Okay DMs:

The game is done, all the prep was worthwhile, your players had fun. Now they've gone home, and all that energy you built up before that has just been spent.

How do you relax? Recuperate?

I have the 18650s, a 256 gig microsd, and I have the SDR/meshtastic board I mentioned before on the way so I can properly load up my uconsole.

....now I just need the uconsole. Also antennas. But mostly the uconsole.

Today's "silly use case for stuff": I have a Flipper I use a criminally small amount. It's basically an overly aggressive remote control for stuff around my apartment at this point.

I forgot to turn off my AC in my living room (one of the big not-quite-window-units.) The flipper has the ability to control it, and it's in the living room

Remote control flipper, hit the power control via it to turn off the AC.

Modern problems, modern solutions.

Meat dice? Meat dice.

A set of seven dice which look like well-marbled beef.

They do not feel like beef. Thankfully.

@johnduggins It was a tossup, as I recall - which is a little embarrassing when you consider that most of the ROG ally models have better performance *on paper* than the steam deck.

Poor thing had to run twice as fast just to keep up because it was dragging around windows' crap.

I'm eager to see how they stack up w/ SteamOS installed, tbh. Haven't seen any numbers floating about on the subject though.

2025-06-05

Confession: I haven't touched my switch since I got a steam deck.

The current generation of PC handhelds is fantastic, and only going to get better as Steam OS gains more and more support for other devices.

As it turns out, windows was the problem.

Seen while out and about: a great blue heron!

This one is actually in a spot I used to see them and saw them regularly, back in 2018 (according to my last dated photo); it might actually be the same one? Apparently they live, on average, 15ish years, but can live to be in their mid-20s. Truth be told, it'd been so long I was pretty sure he was dead. :(

Pretty sure he used to have a mate, if it's the same one - a white heron used to be there w/ him. Only saw him this time.

I'd love to make a positive ident, but those photos look like they were taken on a pixel 2, and uh.. well, cameras have come a little ways since then.

NGL - seeing him there made me a bit happy. It's been a minute.

I don't know how I did it, but I managed to drink two monsters in a day and nap for three hours immediately thereafter anyhow.

I *may* have built up a resistance.

Random:

If an LLM is ever shown to be compromised by training data in such a way that it behaves how a threat actor wants instead of how the person using it wants it to, if the incident isn't called ChatAPT, I'm going to consider it a failure on the part of the cybersecurity industry.
