My interests are #openeducation, #oer, #edtech, #highered, and #onlinelearning. I am a past president of Open Education Global. I retired from UC Irvine where I was the Associate Dean for Open Education. I served six years on the board of directors of the African Virtual University.
Also, I’m a struggling Golden State #Warriors fan.

What could contribute more to government efficiency than securing lucrative contracts for your crypto donors to implement inefficient technology that is uniquely suited to solving problems you don’t have?

Congratulations to Tanja Urbancic, former dean of management and engineering at the University of Nova Gorica, for receiving the lifetime achievement award in higher education from the Ministry of Eeducation of the Republic of Slovenia. She is a founder of two important #oer programs, #OE4BW and the first accredited degree program in OER Leadership.

Anyone else thinks "transformative agreements" by big publishers aren't really that transformative? Seems like another way we 'bend' to their will and guarantee their comfortable oligopoly and survival.

Bizarrely, I asked #ChatGPT to calculate how many days between two arbitrary dates. It was #OffByOne and when I challenged it, said, "I apologize for the mistake in my previous response. To calculate the number of days between today (March 10, 2023) and June 9, 2023, we can subtract the two dates. June 9, 2023 - March 10, 2023 = 91 days Therefore, there are 91 days between today and June 9, 2023.
See attached screenshot." Can't make this up. See the screenshot for the full exchange.

Took advantage of #OEweek23 to (re)join #oeglobal as an individual member. You should, too! Support free-to-use, modify-without-having-to-seek-permission-first #oer #cc educational materials.

The #copyright implications of #ChatGPT and other AI are pretty interesting. In the US, the Copyright Office won't register a copyright for purely AI-generated content (see bit.ly/3JXLyWW), but will for works that adapt and modify AI-generated content: petapixel.com/2022/09/27/ai-ge.

Just as with #OER and #creativecommons licenses, the notions of attribution and delineating modifications needs to filter out into general copyright law when human vs. machine creation of content is at issue.

@billyanders Your post about #JordanPoole was close to being prophetic about last night's #Warriors #Hawks game.

2022-12-31

@billyanders Great performance by JP and Klay and great win by the #Warriors. But the late minutes critical turnovers by Jordan are reminiscent of the days when Steph had to throw blind, behind-the-back passes. They sometimes worked, but more often led to a critical turnover. Got to remember how young JP is.

@feltbot I never understood the Kerr critics - see sfgate.com/warriors/article/Wa - who thought he was too soft on players. I didn’t think the #warriors could go all the way last year, but they benefit more than other teams when they reduce the squad to 8-9 players in the playoffs. This year is even more challenging than last, but the wins against the #Celtics and #Grizzlies give us a taste of what the team could be like at the end of the year.

What are the #copyright and #licensing and #oer implications for #chatgpt. See the below (openai.com/api/policies/sharin):

“Here is some stock language you may use to describe your creative process, provided it is accurate:
‘The author generated this text in part with GPT-3, OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model. Upon generating draft language, the author reviewed, edited, and revised the language to their own liking and takes ultimate responsibility for the content of this publication.’”

So I used #chatgpt #ai and asked it a standard essay question:
"Compare and contrast the strengths and weakness of the use of #OER in higher education."

Screenshot of ChatGPT-generated response to prompt: "Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the use of OER in higher education."Part II of ChatGPT response to prompt: "Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the use of OER in higher education." ChaptGPT-generated text is below:

Some of the main weaknesses of OER in higher education include:

Quality: One potential downside of OER is that the quality can vary widely. Because anyone can create and share OER, there is no guarantee that the materials will be accurate, up-to-date, or well-designed. This can make it difficult for educators to know which OER to use and trust.

Support: Another potential weakness of OER is that they may not come with the same level of support that traditional educational materials do. For example, OER may not come with teacher's guides, answer keys, or other resources that can be helpful for educators. This can make it more challenging for educators to use OER effectively in the classroom.

Intellectual property: Finally, OER can sometimes raise issues related to intellectual property. Because OER are freely available for anyone to use, it can be difficult to know who owns the rights to the materials and whether they are being used in accordance with the law. This can be a complex and confusing issue for educators to navigate.

Offtopic. As a longtime #Warriors and #NBA fan, the game the other night against the Pelicans was a travesty. The NBA schedules #backtoback #roadgames in different cities, so the Warriors give the night off to four of their five starters. Imagine being a kid wanting to get a glimpse of @StephCurry only to see a game that might as well have been against a #GLeague squad, a forty-point blowout. Not blaming the #Warriors - the NBA schedule is the problem.

OEGlobal is having really useful #oer #openEducation discussions on its discourse server at connect.oeglobal.org. Check out the discussions and resources on #fediverse, particularly the presentation by @Downes, #openEdTech, and many more. Very impressed by the quality of the conversation on the site.
