Stackoverflow bans LLMs: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/42183

I missed this but still important news.

There is nothing shocking in the rationale, the quality is just not high enough and the content just sounds right enough that the effort to review swamps out good content.

All use of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT1 and other LLMs) is banned when posting content on Stack Overflow.
This includes "asking" the question to an AI generator then copy-pasting its output as well as using an AI generator to "reword" your answers.
Please see the Help Center article: What is this site’s policy on content generated by generative artificial intelligence tools?
Overall, because the average rate of getting correct answers from ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies is too low, the posting of content created by ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies is substantially harmful to the site and to users who are asking questions and looking for correct answers.

"Technocracy" was a movement in the early 20th century ...

... that insisted that democracy was terrible ...

... and society should be run by elite engineers, scientists and businesspeople

A major figure in that movement?

step forward, Joshua Haldeman ...

.... grandfather of Elon Musk

When you read the list of stuff that Technocracy folks believed and wanted, you can see a *direct* line to Musk and DOGE

gift link: nytimes.com/2025/04/04/opinion

Screenshot reading:

Leading technocrats proposed replacing democratically elected officials and civil servants — indeed, all of government — with an army of scientists and engineers under what they called a technate. Some also wanted to annex Canada and Mexico. At technocracy’s height, one branch of the movement had more than a quarter of a million members.

Under the technate, humans would no longer have names; they would have numbers. One technocrat went by 1x1809x56. (Mr. Musk has a son named X Æ A-12.) Mr. Haldeman, who had lost his Saskatchewan farm during the Depression, became the movement’s leader in Canada. He was technocrat No. 10450-1.

Technocracy first gained worldwide attention in 1932 but soon splintered into rival factions. Technocracy Incorporated was founded and led by a former New Yorker named Howard Scott. Across the continent, rival groups of technocrats issued a flurry of tracts, periodicals and pamphlets explaining, for instance, how “life in a technocracy” would be utterly different from life in a democracy: “Popular voting can be largely dispensed with.”

Today marks the 20th anniversary of me arriving in Germany with my parents. If they hadn't abandoned their jobs, friends and family and taken me out of Russia, I might very well have perished by now.

@fosdem yesterday, we had our post mortem meeting. Blown up to seven hours straight, and we only got through everything by aggressively skipping and timeboxing -- after(!) moving half of it to the kick-off... Almost twenty people on site in Brussels with half a dozen more calling in.

There's a LOT of details and discussions to running a successful #FOSDEM

Afterwards, we had dinner together

Another #FOSDEM ask/offer:

We are actively interested in loaning our video boxes to other conferences. If you want an easy, #opensource, and #openhardware way to record video and laptop, do let me know.
fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event for details.

And yes, they frickeled the microphones just before the talk, normally the sound quality is good. We're aware of the irony :)

Retoots appreciated, as always.

@fosdem And then, I closed #FOSDEM out with the closing keynote: fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event

Second time in a row that I couldn't do the closing dance for health reasons, hopefully 2026 is better.

But no matter if kidney stone, car accident, or whatever. I'd attend #FOSDEM in a wheelchair if need be.
