@clarko @charliemchapman Oh my god this could’ve saved me so much pain two years ago!

Not knowing this was most of the reason Overcast’s now-playing screen is a non-full-height sheet.

But it *IS* time-constrained, by Apple's choice!

@marcoarment It’s not just the CPU either: network operations can be an order of magnitude slower.

Since there aren’t any “efficiency radios” it kinda makes sense.

I would like them to document what’s going on here in any case.

Ubiquiti’s EV charging stations do load sharing like Tesla’s Wall Connectors, but you also get neat historical statistics that show you things like “hey, both of our cars combined used $140 of electricity combined last month. Not too shabby!”

Weird (undocumented?) thing I learned with some logging:

Code running in a BGProcessingTaskRequest is WAAAAYYYY slower than foreground app usage.

A CPU-heavy operation runs about 10X faster in the foreground than in a ProcessingTask set to require power, and while charging overnight.

I'm guessing they're constrained to the efficiency cores, but in that context… why? Isn't the whole point of the ProcessingTask to enable this sort of work when power’s not constrained?

The Apple Intelligence developer-beta "outage" has actually given me a great test condition, with a very positive result:

Whatever “Apple Intelligence" models that are broken right now in the beta are NOT required for the SpeechAnalyzer transcription functionality. It works great, even as Writing Tools don't work and I have the old Siri animation.

Surprisingly, we have thoughts.

Does .tabViewBottomAccessoryPlacement… work?

No matter what I do, it's always nil.

(Also, those .tabViewBottomAccessory content views get teeeerrrrrible geometry)

@colinrobertson Cometeer’s frozen pods are amazing, and they’re fine to be thawed for at least a day or two, although they’re bigger and probably a bit risky (for leakage) in that context.

In the powdered/crystals market, Blue Bottle’s Bright instant is my favorite.

Apple's beta Speech APIs include a speech-to-text transcription model that runs on-device and blows away OpenAI's Whisper, the model many apps use today. My hands-on tests are on @macstories:

Mockup time! What could be a reasonable "middle ground" between the Mac OS design that we have today and the radical Liquid Glass design we saw this week from ?

Disclaimer: this does not attempt to solve all the issues of modern Mac OS design, such as cramped toolbars caused by full-height sidebars and combining the toolbar with the title bar. I feel like the Apple of today is too far gone to do anything about those.

Read on to see what I actually tried to address.
