Last week I attended Etna Days, a three-day excursion to taste the wines, visit the cellars, and dust my boots with volcanic soil. It was my fifth tour there, a chance to re-taste wines I’ve come to admire and discover new wines, too.

I’ve just published notes on 60 wines that were my favorites. Quality was so high overall it was hard to winnow the list, and my notes are but a taste. Enjoy.

I loved talking with Margot Mazur for their Substack, The Fizz. We had a rich conversation about the evolution of wine writing, wine language and lexicons, intersubjectivity, and where wine communications might be (or should be) headed.

As new communities discover wine, they also discover the limitations of wine writing that relies heavily on the language of flavor.

In my inaugural Chair's column for the Circle of Wine Writers Circular, I share some insights and offer examples of members' work that brings fresh perspective and voice.

I was interviewed about my wine writing approach and inspirations, my current research focus, the state of the craft, advice to new pros, and the prospect of making a living (or not). Hope you enjoy it.

Wine is a constellation of traits fixed and mutable. The taster must understand both.

@mangotable Coincidentally I led a tasting of volcanic wines last Friday evening, which included a white and red from the Canary Islands, a Malvasia Volcanica and a Listan Negro.
