@carnage4life nah. fix viewers won’t figure it out until the coming mass layoffs and food scarcity hit. cause they don’t pay attention to politics or financial news.

2025-04-09

@0x00string pretty sure you’ll have more opportunities in the very near future

2025-04-09

@0x00string bro, you have no idea. just wait until all the trumpers who don’t normally pay attention to politics or financial news not only lose their jobs/incomes, but try to buy a house at 10%+ interest rates, and discover how much of our food supply comes daily from both Mexico and Canada.

it’s gonna be fucking wild

16 years ago, I started the daily SANS Internet Storm Center "Stormcast." Hoping that it still helps to make the tens of thousands of listeners "Sound Smarter" as they get to work in the morning. It can be challenging to stay updated in information security and to cut through the noise to figure out what matters, what is new, and how to respond to recent threats. I hope this podcast adds more signal than noise each day. Because security is best if it is a bit boring.

Over 16 years, I recorded about 3,900 episodes and 26,000 minutes of content (sounds more impressive than 16 days :) ).

Subscribe to it wherever you find podcasts. Works on Alexa flash briefings, YouTube, and more.

At least one Democrat is saying explicitly that the party should fight back against Trump and Musk by refusing to help Republicans reach a government funding deal.

“Look, if we have to take steps to be able to hold them accountable,
use the leverage that we have to force it,
I cannot support efforts that will continue this lawlessness that we’re seeing when it comes to this administration’s actions,”
Sen. #Andy #Kim
(D-New Jersey) said on NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”

“And for us to be able to support government funding in that way
only for them to turn it around to dismantle the government,
that is not something that should be allowed."

This is what government by clusterfuck looks like. The techbros currently wrecking departments know what privilege escalation is, but they're not the ones creating the ban words. It's a kind of synergistic bullshit engine.

a funny thing about trying to write about "the terminal" in a holistic way is that I often get pushback (“no julia, the terminal is not 1 thing, it’s the terminal emulator/shell/many different programs/OS terminal driver/etc”)

and while that's obviously true, it feels important to me to take some time to think about the whole system together since that's usually how we experience it, and because the lines between the different parts are often extremely blurry

I beg you to stop using the phrase "ethical hacking" it's just hacking.

If you want to specify the professional practice, it's offensive security or penetration testing.

@siliconundergro that’s because the person running it now is a McKinsey consultant. Amazing to me that Larry and Sergey could hand the reigns over to Sundhar and just sit back and watch as he slowly kills their life’s work from there inside.

A big batch of #InfoCon #Security and #Hacking conference torrents have been updated! This was almost two months of work, the #SecurityBSides directory alone got over 30 updates!

Why so much time? We are converting the archive from HEVC -> AV1 format. This allows pseudo-streaming in most browsers - You no longer have to download the videos to watch them

When we add a new con, like #BSides Las Vegas 2024, we go back and also re-encode all past BSides Las Vegas to AV1.

Over time all active cons will be converted, older cons no longer active will be a different effort later.

Microsoft is one of the main companies pushing #AI assistants into business and education contexts.

Let's ask Microsoft Research for the consequences:

"Moreover, while GenAI can improve worker efficiency, it can inhibit critical engagement with work and can potentially lead to long-term overreliance on the tool and diminished skill for independent problem-solving."

So Microsoft research agrees (and shows in a study) that usage of GenAI assistants have a significant negative impact on cognitive skills, especially when it comes to critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

How does anyone think that this should have a place in schools or universities, areas where the development of critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are the core task?

Right-wing propaganda in defense of defunding research is always like, "we were spending $10M on beetle ejaculate????", and then you do one quick online search and learn that beetle ejaculate has cured multiple STDs

I'm back online-ish after health matters required shutting down. Light posting, if any, for a while.

Wildly dismayed that "mainstream" journalism remains 95% clueless -- obviously on purpose at this point -- about the coup that's underway while Democrats publicly search for spines and voices.

Dems can't even make political hay of the Trump regime's killing off the agency that was trying to protect people from corrupt bankers.
