@emoryr there may be another way to do it but most people I've seen just use alts for this.

I love that while “toot” started as a joke, and Eugen is desperate to disavow it, you will have pry that bit of terminology from our cold, dead hands 🐘💨

I feel, as part of my initiation into this space, I must talk about my love of elephants.

Yes, you heard me. You see, though bestiaries were very common in Western Europe, elephants were not.

So things like this happen.

"SO... lion body... got it, cloven hooves, okay, big ears and dead bird eyes... long snake face... PERFECTION."

An "elephant" with a very long nose, a mane like a lion's, a tail like a lion's, and hooves like a horse, in an illuminated manuscript.

If ghost-story monsters ever decide to come after me they're going to be really disappointed by my lack of reaction, because I just assume that anything going thump in the night is these loud assholes.

@xor I also couldn't remember if I did one before, but I feel like if I didn't remember then no one else would remember either.

IMO, *because* CWs are so widely used here, most people who aren't trying to avoid that particular type of content don't just scroll past, they do click (or have them all set to autoexpand). So if you might hesitate to post something on Twitter because you know some of your followers are averse to a particular type of material it is much easier to simply post it here with a CW and let people choose for themselves whether to see it.

for newbies, especially the ones who post a lot of politics stuff: use the CW or "Content Warning" feature if you want people to boost your posts.

For example, if you're posting about American politics, you might CW with the subject line "American politics" or "USPol" for short.

Using CWs has been part of the established culture here for years, and people generally don't boost unCW'd politics posts. If you think something's important and want to give it visibility, use a CW.

Hey everyone, I'm building a list of congressional offices on Mastodon -- members of the House and Senate, committees, leadership offices, and non-partisan offices.

If you know of a member of congress that is on mastodon, please add them to the list, here: bit.ly/CongMastoForm

If you want to see who we have found so far, check out bit.ly/MastoCong

Thank you! Please help amplify to crowdsource the list.

@lsparrish if you are working on software, you should have any collaborators agree to release their contributions under the project license before they begin committing and then you won't have to track people down after the fact.

I will say one flaw of CC0 for software is that it explicitly does not grant patent rights -- if you wish to do that (and IMO you should) you can also have people agree to license (or dislcaim) any patent rights they may have in their contributions as well.
