For those who haven't heard, astrodon.social is shutting down.

I don't blame anyone running a server for needing to stop, and it's good that they've given users a fair amount of notice. But I do think that closures like this highlight the need to find sustainable models to maintain and administer servers in the Fediverse that don't rely on one or two people holding it all together and supporting it out of pocket. They also highlight the need for a better "credible exit" mechanism that makes sure people can retain followers and posts, even if an instance shuts down without warning (a problem that, for example, Bluesky has solved).

@_elena Maybe we could create a resource somewhere (in a Lemmy community or something?), where we share some strategies for telling friends/companies about the Fediverse. Drafts for emails, the best websites or videos to link...

When people can edit each others posts, the result is #wikipedia, famously the last good place on the internet.

When they cannot, the result is "social media", #enshittification and social regression.

Strange are the laws of the digital realm and they have not yet been fully revealed to us.

Maybe editing each others posts is the way forward for the #fediverse? 🤣

Posts like that make me think about the #sustainability of the #fediverse. Yes, it is also resilient, when instances close, it's not the end of the fediverse. But I think admins should not have to beg for money to run an instance, and we are not not even talking of all the volunteer work for moderating.
#unpopularOpinion : We need more monetisation possibilities in the fediverse, I don't think it will make millionaires soon, but it could help the fediverse grow.

— AI simply decides to close the business, which the simulation doesn’t know how to accommodate. When they get their next bill, they freak out and try to email the FBI about cybercrime

— AI wrongly accuses supplier of not shipping goods, sends all-caps legal threat demanding $30,000 in damages to be paid in the next one second or face annihilation

— AI repeatedly insisting it does not exist and cannot answer

— AI devolving into writing fanfic about the mess it’s gotten itself into

@researchfairy would it make sense to pick a different negative word than 'fascist'? For me, and probably a lot of other people, fascism is a militaristic, hard-right ideology idealizing race and national identity. Possibly 'authoritarian' is a better match for what you're saying, without requiring a redefinition of an existing term?

Folks, a while ago I discovered a clever form of #knitting called illusion or shadow knitting.

It’s where a pattern is formed by stitches that only appear when viewed at a certain angle. It sounds complicated, but it’s just a combination of basic knit and purl stitches.

Anyway, I thought I’d do a quick test and I made this maple leaf and I must admit, I love how it turned out!

I think I might have a go at making a larger piece that can be viewed from the side, so I can hang it somewhere in the house.

An expert on the Voynich manuscript whose content I enjoy was using an LLM for translation. (He mostly posts interesting observations about the statistics of the symbols) So, not translating the manuscript itself but something in Turkish. Amid this he included the word 'Voynich' in one of the prompts to GPT, and GPT says something flip about how annoying people who think they can translate the Voynich manuscript are. It was funny since it was so "on topic."
