is driven by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere, primarily carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O), resulting from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrial activities. These gases trap infrared radiation, leading to a rise in global temperatures, known as the greenhouse effect. Climate models predict rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disruptions to ecosystems due to shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns.

Three global cycles. One interconnected climate system.

When we talk about climate change, we often zero in on carbon dioxide. But what about water and energy?

Together, the water cycle, global energy balance, and the carbon cycle form a tightly linked system driving the Earth’s climate. A disruption in one affects the others:

💧 Water Cycle: Rising temperatures intensify evaporation and alter rainfall patterns, increasing the frequency of droughts and floods.
⚡ Energy Balance: The Earth absorbs sunlight and re-emits heat. Greenhouse gases trap some of this heat, warming the planet.
🌿 Carbon Cycle: Fossil fuel use and deforestation inject more CO₂ into the atmosphere than natural systems can absorb.

I am thrilled to share our new global dataset on the drivers of forest loss at 1 km resolution, which has been 2+ years in the making! We developed the data using a customized ResNet model trained on a set of samples we collected through visual interpretation of very high-resolution satellite imagery. The model used satellite imagery (Landsat & Sentinel-2) and ancillary data to classify seven driver categories: permanent agriculture, hard commodities (e.g. mining and energy infrastructure), shifting cultivation, logging, wildfires, settlements and infrastructure, and other natural disturbances.

Emissions per capita refers to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced on average per person (or per customer) served by an entity, such as a utility company. In the context of Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) in the U.S., it measures how much CO₂ each customer is effectively responsible for, based on the utility’s total emissions.

Why it's important:
🔍 Customer-Level Insight: Unlike total emissions, it adjusts for the number of people served, giving a fair comparison between large and small utilities.
⚖️ Reveals Efficiency: High emissions per capita can indicate a reliance on fossil fuels or inefficiencies in power generation.
