Decidme una cosa;

Honestly, there is a direct line between Self-help books, Blockchain, Web 3.0, Crypto, NFTs, and AI… and the Manosphere.

White dudes using staggering amounts of energy (mental and actual) to create problems that they’ll tell you only they recognised, and only they can fix… for a price, but if you don’t pay up, you’ll get left behind.

Scratch the surface of most ardent pro-AI proponents and you uncover all sorts of horrendous anti-craft, anti-humanist philosophies.

Remember, the debate is never what they say it is. The debate is never about the practical utility of any one tool or workflow. The debate is *always* about what it means to be human and what means to be creative and what it means to be in dignified communication with other people.

It's a fundamental worldview issue. Always has been.

"The question we should be asking is not if ChatGPT is useful or not, but if OpenAI’s unaccountable power, linked to Microsoft’s monopoly and the business model of the tech economy, is good for society."

LLMs are the cars of the computing world: they seem convenient, but the tradeoffs are not immediately obvious, and if you come to depend on them you may find it hard to break the habit

"A Kenyan software developer who was arrested last week after creating a tool for people to express their opposition to a proposed law has been arraigned in court and released on bail, amid public anger at her detention and growing signs of repression in the east African country and its neighbours."

This is worth watching as an illustration of what we mean when we say that AI is an environmental justice issue: youtube.com/watch?v=3VJT2JeDCy

This technology is extremely energy intensive; generating that energy has high environmental costs; and those costs routinely get concentrated around vulnerable communities denied the right to decline participation.

After the whole "I asked ChatGPT" as talk opener I've recently seen a lot of "Look, my kids are using AI to build their own games and that's beautiful" stuff in presentations.

Makes me sad that instead of wanting kids to learn how to build something they get taught to accept what the kinda-passable code generator craps out. What they learn is not how to conceptualize or build something, what they learn is that shit comes from nowhere if you just match your expectations to the output afterwards.

@Erklaerbaer When pushers such as yourself run out of arguments to defend AI, they always end up talking about cancer. This is profoundly dishonest and manipulative. If you were able to read, you would understand that I am referring to the sort of AIs that capture and erode cognitive skills, and not the ones used in medical research. They are entirely different things. Next time you want to defend the interests of multibillion dollar companies, try to use honest and intelligent arguments.

Salud!

@vonxylofon I also see my students use gen AI more and more... last year it seemed like it was actually possible to push back against the widespread usage of LLMs, but this year everybody's using them. So, it's to late to push back. But, as you say, one day we will try to reverse all this. I just feel that, if we stay away from AI, we will have kept something that others around us may have lost by offloading cognitive tasks to machines.

@Cyclist Yes. I try to stay away as much as I can, but the pressure increases every day

If you believe in the future, stay away from AI.

At first you may feel like you've been left behind. Don't worry -- think, read, write, take time to develop your abilities.

Be present.

When the AI madness passes (yes, it will pass) your skills will be more valuable than ever.
