I am grateful to the Indigenous keepers of the traditional and unceded lands on which I live and work: the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, and the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. I am committed to respecting, listening to, and continuously learning from the diverse interests and perspectives of these and other Indigenous Peoples.

Just a reminder to the people who have been on Mastodon or the Fediverse awhile: remember to follow some new people every once in a while, especially someone with few followers who would just like to connect and be heard by someone. It’s easy to get caught in our routines, but there are new, kind, interesting people joining everyday.
@tayfonay United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby earned $33.9 million in 2024.
@TheBreadmonkey Wish we had such people to organize and unite us today.
@alexpsmith Couldn't agree more.
@ethniccanuck @ZebKing I believe it's what I know as Witches Butter.
@geeknik A few things are starting to make sense to me now.
Gonna work on a mashup of Tonight, Tonight by Smashing Pumpkins and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by Genesis called Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight.
I wish I was surprised.
But when you’ve spent a career dealing with bullies, you stop expecting good faith & start recognizing chaos & threats for what they are: a distraction & a power play.
This 35% tariff threat isn’t about fairness. It’s not about security. It’s about greed & domination.
This is autocratic behaviour plain & simple.
The answer? Don’t flinch. Don’t fold. Don’t bend or bow. We will meet it with calm resolve & strength.
He doesn’t get to define us.

So Bluesky is about to require people to verify their age, which means sharing their real identity. I’ve no problem with people knowing my identity but then I’m not trying to hide from abusers. Or explore my gender. Or be a whistleblower. Or protest without getting arrested. Or or or… there are so many reasons people need anonymity.
Despite being myself online I am not keen to show Bluesky my scanned face or my bank card. So I guess I won’t be sticking around there.
I gave my advice before I left, which was “Switch to Mastodon, nobody there cares who you are, as long as you’re funny.”
Good Morning #Canada
Today is a good day to say thank you to all Saskatchewanians. On this day in 1944, Tommy Douglas became the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan, elected on the promise of #UniversalHealthcare for the province. IMO, Douglas, with his early life experience and education, was the right person at a specific moment in history, and it's not hyperbole to suggest we wouldn't have universal healthcare without his leadership.

@Jargoonco Thanks. ❤️ On the bright side, settling in is back on track, and semi-retirement feels pretty nice.
@blursedtexts No.

@fesshole In lockdown my human started mimicking my meows, and having 'conversations' with me. He now meows constantly, and has developed the most obnoxious sound possible for maximum attention. I broke him.
Big news! I've nearly made a hundred pounds from Vinted! Granted I've had to sell everything I ever owned and had to walk a mile and back to Sameets 40 or 50 times, but hooray!
Infinite Mac can now be embedded into any website: https://infinitemac.org/embed
For a demonstration of what this can enable, see @mwichary's amazing "Frame of preference" article: https://aresluna.org/frame-of-preference/
And for a behind the scenes look, there's a blog post: https://blog.persistent.info/2025/07/infinite-mac-embedding.html (spoiler: Marcin was the instigator for all this, conducted over a months-long 100+ message email thread).
Rainy day today, but breezy and warm yesterday. Have some cloud iridescence.
The last 18 months or so have been challenging, to say the least.
After a long career of hard work and dedication to task, my wife and I bought our new condominium home with a distant mountain and ocean view, with the intent of retiring here next year. Shortly after moving in a couple years ago, it became clear to us that our neighbour had some mental health issues.
We discovered that he had been charged with criminal harassment against a woman nearby for a 13 month campaign of anonymous death threats by mail, one of which included a bullet casing. Next, he made an extremely graphic death threat by email against us. Other bizarre and scary behaviour followed.
We filed a police report, and he was charged criminally with Uttering Threats. We testified in court, along with another neighbour, and just a couple months ago, he was convicted, and sentenced to probation with a conditional discharge. The troubling behaviour continued until then, and thankfully, he sold his place and moved. The probation order includes a provision that he is not to be near us, or on the property here.
We're still getting used to not looking over our shoulder when we're on common property, and finally starting to feel settled. Mastodon, and the people I follow, have been immensely helpful-- a friendly place, with friendly faces. Thank you to all of you-- you know who you are.
