I have to figure out how people quit their job and then just spend a whole year traveling

Couldn’t decide what to post this weekend but I think I’ve got it narrowed down to two topics

Alleys always look cool but especially so at night. This shot from Nantou Ancient City is one of the older looking areas

Two people walk down a dark alley. Some lights on either side illuminate their path a little. Surrounding them are buildings and cables

I wonder what the new exit will look like? I have high hopes

Here is one of the entrances to Nantou Ancient City. Some parts of it, like this gate, look pretty old still, and I think they’ve also found some ruins, but some of Nantou Ancient City is pretty new. Once you pass the gates there are a lot of modern cafes and shops. The streets are pretty tight though, which is one throwback to its older roots

An old Chinese gate is illuminated at night. A sign to the side says that it is Nantou Ancient Town, which is in Shenzhen. Some silhouetted people in front are taking photos

I take a lot of photos of Shenzhen and some of those photos are at night. Normally the shots I take at night are pretty bad but here are some of the least bad ones

Neon signs light up the front of two restaurants in Shenzhen, China. People mill around outside of the restaurant on the right waiting to get in

I just kind of took photos of whatever while on this trip. No notes or anything to remember what anything was. As bad as I am about that now I was much worse back then

A river cuts through the city of Verona in Italy. What looks like a church sits amid other buildings on the left bank and more buildings and trees are on the right

My first trip back when I lived in Spain was to Italy and our first stop was Verona, which is where I took this week’s photos. Verona of course is famous as the setting of 2 of William Shakespeare’s plays, including “Romeo and Juliet”

How about some photos from Italy this week?

Near my apartment is this small river or stream or whatever. It runs north-south right along a main road. One part I often walk by usually has birds in it and I try to take photos of them. Another area has this little crossing area that you can walk down and over. I think there are actually a couple but this is the one I most often see

A stream runs straight forward with flowers and grass sloping up on either side. In the middle there is a crossing with a number of people on it

And Del Amitri and Blues Traveler are in there too

There are some pretty cool ceilings in Shenzhen, including at Gangxia North subway station. This one I think is from somewhere else, but I’m not sure where. I dropped the ball there a bit

Let’s keep going with more Shenzhen photos, this time from Q1 2023. This is a statue of Guan Yu that we saw at a mall where we went for dinner one day. I’m pretty bad at taking interesting photos so I was trying different angles and took this one from the end of the spear and I think it came out okay

I take a lot of photos of flowers because they’re pretty and don’t move so I can take my time. So a lot of my Shenzhen photos aren’t actually of the city but flowers (and mushrooms). This shot though I managed to get some flowers AND some city

Some flowers close to the camera partially cover a small river. Farther out a bridge crosses the river. On the left are a number of buildings and on the right trees line the sidewalk above the water

In my opinion Shenzhen has the best subway system in the world. Clean, air conditioned, easy to figure out where to go, not too busy, and it goes everywhere. In the busier central districts of the city the subway lines are underground, but in the more outer districts they’re often above ground

A pedestrian overpass running left to right is tucked neatly below an aboveground subway line running off into the distance

I live in Shenzhen but don’t post that many Shenzhen photos so this week I’m going to post some that I took back in 2022. I think this photo is from near Lianhuashan Park, which is a large park in Futian District. I live nearby so I have a lot of photos from the area

In the background are some tall buildings under a bright sky. in front of them is a tree lined road, half of which is full of cars

For the last bit of our trip back to the United States we spent a couple days in New York, including a couple of nights in New York City, where we eventually needed to catch a flight. We didn’t have much time to wander around and explore but we made sure to go to Times Square for the requisite photo
