President's Day in the United States was recognized yesterday. But George Washington was born on February 22. For Washington's birthday - a short piece on a 1793 Masonic portrait of the first President.

I have some RSS/Atom content in my article pipeline. It occurred to me that it would be exhausting prefacing every article with an explanation of what these things are. For that reason, I wrote a general introduction to RSS, feeds, and feed readers (aided by the perfect public domain clip art image).

For WordPress admins, a full post on the aesthetic sitemaps generated by The SEO Framework, a clean SEO plugin that I am enjoying thus far (only hiccup is my account being disconnected twice - will see if that issue persists).

had to explain RSS to two fellow gen z-ers

me: its kind of like subscribing for updates on a website, before "following" was a thing.

them: oh, is that something new?

me: actually closed "following" on walled gardens, like twitter, kind of killed out a lot of RSS for our generation, but there are people who still use it and find it handy

them: wait, so i don't need to make an account?

me: no.

A few weeks ago, I posted screenshots of an AmigaOS-inspired theme that I am using for XFWM4 on Manjaro's XFCE edition (scroll down on my Pixelfed for the image). Before I started using Manjaro XFCE in July 2021, I had been using Manjaro KDE Plasma. With KDE, I used an aesthetic Mondrian-inspired theme, pictured here, which I reviewed in early 2021. I have not used it since I switched from KDE to XFCE, but it is still available - so I presume it works as well as it did when I had it installed.

In 2020, I overheard first date conversation while walking past a restaurant. A lady, in words not entirely amenable publication on a family website, made clear to her date that she does not associate with men who went to jail. Fortunately, her date assured her that he had never been in that sort of temporary housing. Had the lady been burned before? I wonder.

My thoughts as we just cross the 70% mark on updating the AUR ungoogled-chromium package after about 75 minutes.

Nintendo making Pokémon Bank free - and looks like it will be maintained beyond 2023. I am working on a project to beat Pokémon Colosseeum for the first time in a long time and port Pokémon all the way to Switch. On one hand, Nintendo's announcement is good news - but on the other, it probably won't make me not procrastinate.

I am testing the @Mojeek search engine and found an interesting feature with its domain-specific searches. At the bottom of a results page, Mojeek provides outgoing links to try the same search in Brave, Ecosia, Gigablast, and Startpage - although Startpage seems to block the referral if you are using a VPN (tested with Mullvad). Nice feature while Mojeek continues to grow.

(See my site as example.)

"When Danbo saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer."

(Or something like that.)

(I totally didn't apply a lazy filter in Nomacs because the picture I took was fuzzy and I don't know how to properly retouch photos.)

(For those who are strangely curious, that is a Danbo speaker - but the "speaker" part does not actually work... so it's really just a Danbo with a cord.)

A post for WordPress Admins. I recently moved from Yoast to The SEO Framework (premium) for our SEO solution. I like the UI so far and it is definitely less cluttered than Yoast and lighter on resources. One thing I was not expecting was an aesthetic sitemap page:

thenewleafjournal.com/sitemap.

I customized the colors to match our site's aesthetic. Very nice. I'll monitor how it performs over the next few weeks.

@BlueHeron Thank you for reading and for the complement. The New Leaf Journal is a bird-friendly publication (and also based in New York City), so I will note your comment as a request and work on some heron content.

@gnomad108@fosstodon.org Nice to meet you, good to find more writers here - I'll get to my Pixelfed comments shortly. While I'm a writer/legal researcher by trade, I spent most of the last week and change moving my writing site from shared hosting to a VPS server... looking forward to getting back to writing first soon.

In late January, I wrote a history of Owney the mail-dog. From 1889-1898, Owney accompanied U.S. mail on trains traveling across the United States (and on a few boats abroad) - before returning to his home at the Albany Post Office. Story includes links to more detailed materials and photos of Owney.

In our newest newsletter, I cover the process I undertook to move The New Leaf Journal from Bluehost shared hosting to Hetzner Cloud, along with 9 article recommendations from around the web and other content.

(So far so good - and unsurprisingly a huge performance bump.)

During snowy times in Brooklyn, New York, in December 2020, I wrote a meditation on taking care while walking on the snow and ice using a chapter of Epictetus' Enchiridion as my guide.
