Many think that our current first of May doesn’t line up with when May Day was celebrated long ago so any day this week is close enough. Terence Meaden, he of the interesting Stonehenge theories, likes to say that our 6th of May would be the true May Day. But then he has the same bias as me: it’s both our birthdays.

At any rate there’s nothing wrong with celebrating all week!

Hal An Tow, which I posted earlier, is the right song for the first week of May but in keeping with the spirit of it, let me bring you Songs from the Wood. youtube.com/watch?v=z4UYX2qpUK0
“Let me bring you love from the field:
Poppies red and roses filled with summer rain
To heal the wound and still the pain
That threatens again and again
As you drag down every lover's lane
Life's long celebration's here,
I'll toast you all in penny cheer!”

A link to see pictures of the most beautiful cherry tree in the park. It finished blooming a few days ago but it was too good not to share. tumblr.com/geopsych/7824664796

My anonymous blog on Tumblr reached 120,000 followers. Kind of a pipeline between nature in the places I go and the Tumblr community.

Started it because foraging for beauty distracted me from my depression.

This is absolutely my kind of fun and if there were something like this for the first week of May in my town I might feel more at home here. What fun to dress up in leaves and flowers!

Meanwhile over on Tumblr I'm seeing strong support for Kermit the frog for pope.

She just flew in from the Yucatan—and boy are her arms tired! 😅 Welcome back, Ms hummingbird!

Common grackle checking out what appears to be a blue jay feather in the stream. Grackles seem to spend a lot of time in and at the edges of streams.

A slightly elongated black bird with blue iridescence on its head and a bright yellow eye on a rounded stone in a stream peering down at a blue and black feather. The stream is a clear green, reflecting plant life on the other side.

Guardian of the wildflowers. Saw this cute chipmunk this morning in an area covered with thousands of native wildflowers.

Loads of hickory trees and other nut and seed bearers, bird song all the time and a lake view. This creature chose well.

A cute striped-back chipmunk with its shiny black eye on the camera. It is posed alertly on a thin fallen log and surrounded by sunlit leaves and both white and blue flowers, out of focus.

@jeridansky Every spring I look at our cardinals and think how red they are, then these guys show up and out-glow them by a mile.

@baconandcoconut More fitting to the tropics where they winter than to here!

While I was in the woods today photographing a wood thrush and a scarlet tanager and wildflowers, listening to bird song, my next door neighbor called me and told me to look outside there was a out back.

I would love to have seen it but you can't be everywhere at once. (Thought: will this reduce the squirrel population? Also, note to self: be doubly sure not to let the cat slip out!)

Scarlet tanager friend in the woods this morning. My favorite neotropical migrant. This fellow leaves no doubt that spring migration is in full swing in eastern PA. Also heard oriole, great crested flycatcher, wood thrush, veery, ovenbird and the Merlin app heard more.

It's go time!

Peeking between thin branches a brilliant red bird with black wings and black around its eyes.

Here’s an added picture of Bridget defending her favorite spot against anyone who might want to, you know, sit in their own chair.

The same cat, up on her feet and braced, ears back, eyes wide, whiskers forward, tail curved, clearly ready to draw blood should anyone get any closer. Having given enough blood for one week I backed off.

I missed so here's Bridget a day late in her favorite chair, caught mid-wash.

Relaxed on a pastel-striped blanket on a chair with wooden arms, Bridget, a 4 colored tortoiseshell tabby with white paws and a white stripe down her nose, is looking at the camera with what may be a mildly annoyed look. One front paw is curled in front of her as if she has just stopped grooming it. A white hind paw is held down by her other front paw. Her orange, tan, and black markings look very cute from this angle.
