@COMPU73E I remember reading Battle Royale after seeing the film and thinking ‘my god this is so much worse than the film version’. Still gives me shivers thinking about it.

Mastodon feels like the future the 1980s promised us. "Oh look, a post from my friend at hacker.space, and what a funny comment from some guy on gaysex.cloud, perhaps I should follow them, they seem witty."

It feels like you could turn a corner and wind up in a tearoom filled with furries discussing existentialism. Across the street are anarchists arguing loudly with socialists about how best to stick it to the capitalists.

Just down the way is a photographer who only takes pictures of bees.

I’m looking through my Macintosh user guide (the booklet that accompanied my 1984 Macintosh) for the first time in a while, and I’m a little obsessed with this graphic explaining scrolling.

A page from the “Learning Macintosh” chapter of the Macintosh user guide. It says “Most of the time, a window on the desktop can't show you the entire directory or document all at once, even when you've made the window very large. There's often more information than can fit in the window at one time.” With a MacPaint-generated papyrus scroll featuring a square demonstrating the visible content.

Looking at a finance document for work and it features a bunch of acronyms. One of them is ‘NCR’. I don’t know what that is. The only ‘NCR’ I know is the New California Republic from Fallout.

Seems unlikely to be that though.

America is a crazy place, and one that I called home for a long time, so I have some thoughts on its current state. I finally got around to writing them down.

The sticker concerns me. What makes this tuna suitable for me but not for someone in Belgium?

Do I really want to know?

A person holds a can of tuna chunks in brine. The can has a label indicating it's not for the European Union. The background shows tiled flooring.

In June, we proposed new Terms of Service for registered users of on our mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers. We did not do enough to consider the full impact of the terms, and the community was very clear that we needed to reconsider.

We've done that over the past few months. Today, we're posting an alternative set of terms, along with an opportunity for the community to provide feedback.

Algorithms were invented in 825 AD by scientist Mohammed Algorithm

"algorithms were invented in 825 AD by scientist Mohammed Algorithm" sounds like a batshit insane sentence but is literally completely accurate

Around 825 AD, Persian scientist and polymath Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī wrote kitāb al-hisab al-hindi ("Book of Indian computation") and kitab al-jam' wa'l-tafriq al-hisāb al-hindī ("Addition and subtraction in Indian arithmetic"). In the early 12th century, Latin translations of said al-Khwarizmi texts involving the Hindu-Arabic numeral system and arithmetic appeared, for example Liber Alghoarismi de practica arismetrice, attributed to John of Seville, and Liber Algorismi de numero Indorum, attributed to Adelard of Bath. Hereby, alghoarismi or algorismi is the Latinization of Al-Khwarizmi's name; the text starts with the phrase Dixit Algorismi, or "Thus spoke Al-Khwarizmi". Around 1230, the English word algorism is attested and then by Chaucer in 1391, English adopted the French term.

Today I saw someone toot, in dismay, people are posting their everyday life to Mastodon when they could simply buy a diary for $1.99. I can't stop thinking about this.
What if this is all they have? What if they're isolated with or without people in their life? What if the only kind word they hear this week is, "That's cool"? I say, post your mundane. Post anything you want. While being silenced everywhere else, don't be silent here.

labour when CyberDyne wants to make an Al database of all british people so kids who spraypaint rubbish bins can be shot on sight’

#introduction
Hello! Kwe'! My name is Sage and I am a transgender woman from Atlantic Canada. Raised by a mother of English descent, I lost touch with my indigenous background on my father's side from a young age, although through my partner, a two-spirit L'nu, I am slowly learning more about the culture and becoming connected to my roots!

I am a programmer and FOSS advocate who currently works as a programming instructor, teaching software development to kids of all ages through project based learning with a focus on game development, which includes lots of math and physics.

I am also quite politically active. I'm a registered member of Canada's NDP and consider myself to be a democratic socialist. I believe that the working class needs to take back control from corporations. I believe food and housing are fundamental human rights. I stand with Palestine, Ukraine, and anyone else who faces oppression in these trying times.

I look forward to meeting like-minded folk on this platform! Thank you! Wela'lin!
