Today, I am sharing once again this moving speech improvised by Christopher Tolkien in January 2019, when he discovered the Aubusson tapestries created with his approval, and that of Baillie Tolkien, the Tolkien Estate and the Tolkien Trust. youtu.be/rQmh_Sfq88Y?t=226

Tomorrow, I will have the pleasure of representing the Tolkien Estate, the Tolkien Trust and the Estate of Christopher Tolkien at the inauguration of ‘Cité 2’, an extension of the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie. 15 years after the launch of the project... cite-tapisserie.fr/le-musee/le ... following the famous interview with Christopher Tolkien that I helped Raphaëlle Rérolle to prepare lemonde.fr/culture/article/201

There are many quality control systems of that type.

It's indeed 423808 in Code 128, repeated. Very likely some bindery control sequence: use of barcodes there is not unusual (though one would expect it to be trimmed properly, esp. with such redundancy...)
The value may be anything, depending on the printer and binding system.
The IBIS binder system for instance uses a barcode with a sheet number, a total, a control code, a short book ID and a job ID. Doesn't match here, but that's the general idea.

For an upcoming release of my collection of add-on modules for the typesetting system, I wanted to have some fun and implemented PDF forms (interactive fields)...
Well, It is not the best-written part of the PDF specifications; and as far as I can tell playing with options, support by PDF viewers is at best spotty, when not to say inconsistent...
I wonder if these PDF forms are still used for anything serious, in the modern age of the web?

@publicvoit @ericsfraga @jbc The "English spacing" convention using a large space between sentence is a 18th-19th "printers' rules" mostly abandoned in modern days. Using"two spaces was only a way to emulate it with typewriter machines. (La)TeX applies English spacing by default, but calls the reverse "french spacing" -- Though the French had nothing to do with it specifically, having a regular inter-word space was the convention everywhere else outside the English-speaking world ;)

From a simple YAML input, my collection of add-on modules for the SILE digital typesetting system now generates hybrid Factur-X / ZugFeRD PDFs!
🚀 Sweet, styled, and automation-ready.

I can't remember if we mentioned the Summer 2025 update of the aforementioned bibliography!

Le Dragon de brume is moreover very grateful to just discover than the great Tolkien-scholars W.G. Hammond & C. Scull mentioned it on their website (Sept. 2025 update).

Mention of Le Dragon de Brume's "A bibliography of Tolkien studies in French & English" on Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull's website (Sept. 2025 update):
"pp. 155–7, entry for Bibliographies: The French Tolkien group Le Dragon de Brume maintains online _A Bibliography of Tolkien Studies in French and English._ To date (September 2025) this has been updated twice, and in pdf form runs to 386 pages. The compilers aim to provide ‘a “centralized directory” of bibliographic references, designed to meet the evolving needs of researchers and students interested in Tolkien’s scholarship, in a broad sense’ (p. 7), though they admit that any selection of entries is subjective and any list of Tolkien literature is never up to date.'

It is often a good idea to use the `--sandbox` flag when integrating pandoc in a server context, as this will prevent all IO operations during the conversion, thus shielding against information leaks. Internally, this is enforced on the type-level, making it virtually impossible to circumvent.

The article below describes one of the dangers that `--sandbox` shields against.

After Safari and Chromium-based browsers, now Firefox finally also provides correct line breaking at orthographic syllable boundaries for several Brahmic scripts such as Balinese and Javanese. This style of line breaking was originally proposed in
unicode.org/L2/L2022/22080r2-l
and standardized in Unicode 15.1
unicode.org/reports/tr14/tr14-

The screen shots show line breaking for Balinese in the past and the present. The text is supposed to stay inside the box.

Did you know the system supports a fairly decent subset of / and Citation Style Language for bibliographies? True, it's a work in progress, but with some fixes just proposed upstream, it gets better at the task.

A selected bibliography of books by typographer Jan Tschichold, rendered with the SILE digital typesetting system from entries in Bib(La)TeX format. Selected CSL refenrence style is Chicago Author-Date.

Did you know the supports a very decent subset of the (La)TeX math syntax, besides MathML ? True, there are still bugs and limitations. With some fixes proposed upstream, it gets better at the task.

Some Computational Fluid Dynamics equation taken from a document with an original formula in TeX math syntax, rendered by the SILE typesetting system, with only a few tweaks ; and actually a bug fix proposed upstream.
