Spring Dragonfly Perched On Weathered Pier Column by Joan Stratton - paintingsbyjoan.com

A dragonfly pauses on a weathered wooden post, wings outstretched, soaking up the spring warmth above tranquil turquoise waters. The sky behind is soft and scattered with clouds, casting gentle shadows across the sea.

I created this piece using a mix of traditional painting and my Ether Art technique — layering hand-drawn digital elements over my original canvas to capture the stillness and subtle movement of coastal life. It’s a quiet moment, full of light, texture, and the kind of peace you find near the water’s edge.

Spring Dragonfly Perched On Weathered Pier Column is perfect for lovers of nature art, coastal décor, and expressive insect illustrations. Whether displayed in a beach house, meditation space, or sunny nook, it brings a breath of spring and a touch of seaside magic.

As twilight falls, Paris and her foal stand watchful and serene—wrapped in the hush of approaching night.

Night Approaches Paris and Foal by Joan Stratton - paintingsbyjoan.com

As the light fades, Paris and her foal Cam stand quietly — silhouettes softened by the glow of twilight. Their forms are wrapped in shadows and subtle highlights, set against a dreamy background of green polka dots and layered contours.

RBH Paris is a Warmblood mare bred for show jumping, she resides at RBH Park - Warmblood breeders & producers of horses for the Show jumping market, in the heart of North East Victoria, Australia.

This piece captures her gentle strength and maternal calm as evening settles in. I created it using my Ether Art technique — hand-drawn digitally from a blank canvas, blending traditional drawing methods with modern tools to evoke emotion and atmosphere.

Night Approaches Paris and Foal is perfect for equestrian lovers, animal portrait collectors, and anyone drawn to the quiet beauty of horses at rest. Available across fine art prints, canvases, apparel, and home décor.

Monochrome Daisy Shadows Bokeh by Joan Stratton - paintingsbyjoan.com

One, two, three. I am you and you are me. All from the same seed, we vary slightly.

Three daisies bloom in grayscale — soft shadows and bold contrast layered over a patterned background with hints of orange and brown. The composition plays with geometry and repetition, creating a modern, minimalist rhythm that’s both abstract and organic.

I created this piece using my Ether Art technique — hand-drawn digitally from a blank canvas, blending floral forms with graphic design elements. It’s a quiet meditation on identity, symmetry, and the beauty of subtle variation.

Monochrome Daisy Shadows Bokeh is perfect for lovers of modern floral art, abstract design, and monochrome elegance. Available across fine art prints, canvases, apparel, and home décor.

Maroon Bells

I seek out certain destinations that fill this desire of mine to seek out God's beautify of this land.
It actually wasn't too long ago where I can recall first hearing of this place. It is said to be the most photographed view in all of Colorado.
I was so thrilled to see these grand purple mountains showing their fall beauty with the yellow aspens.

Two little Corellas playing hide-and-seek in paradise — palm fronds, blue skies, and feathered mischief.
I loved painting this moment of tropical peekaboo, where curiosity meets camouflage and those blue-ringed eyes say, “You didn’t see us… right?”

Palm Peekaboo Australian Little Corellas In Hiding by Joan Stratton - paintingsbyjoan.com

Two cheeky white Corellas play hide-and-seek behind a curtain of palm fronds in this tropical slice of paradise. Their soft plumage glows against a dreamy blue sky, while their curious blue-ringed eyes peek through the leaves like feathered spies. I loved capturing this moment of quiet mischief—nature’s own version of peekaboo—where light, shadow, and foliage frame the birds in a dance of camouflage and curiosity.

The interplay of light and shadow through the palm fronds creates such a lush, immersive atmosphere. The way the cockatoos are partially veiled by the leaves adds a sense of quiet observation—like we’re catching a glimpse of something intimate and wild. Their blue eye rings pop beautifully against the soft whites and greens, and the gradient sky gives it a dreamy, tropical serenity.

This piece blends expressive wildlife art with a touch of whimsy, perfect for bird lovers, tropical dreamers, and anyone who’s ever felt the joy of spotting something beautiful just out of view.

The scientific name for Little Corella, Cacatua sanguinea, means 'Blood-stained Cockatoo' and refers to the dark pink markings between the eye & the bill. Also known as the short-billed corella, bare-eyed cockatoo, it is native to Australia & southern New Guinea.

“Hold still,” they said. But the Ulysses butterfly had other plans…
A surreal fashion portrait where nature meets haute couture — cone flowers, thistles, and fluttering wings crown her head in a vibrant swirl of colour and whimsy.

Portrait Butterflies Tickle by Joan Stratton - paintingsbyjoan.com

"I'm just getting the lighting right," yells the photographer from the distance as the model thinks "This giant Ulysses butterfly is tickling my nose! If you don't take the photographs soon, I'm going to sneeze and ruin everything!"

A vibrant fashion portrait featuring a woman in an elaborate floral headdress — cone flowers, thistles, and butterflies swirl around her head like haute couture meets fantasy garden. Her green eyes gaze forward, lips painted pink, framed by abstract lime green shapes and ethereal shadows.

Created using my Ether Art technique — hand-drawn digitally from a blank canvas — this piece blends surreal storytelling with bold colour and expressive design.

Portrait Butterflies Tickle is perfect for collectors of whimsical fashion art, surreal portraits, and nature-inspired abstraction. Available across fine art prints, canvases, apparel, and home décor.

Stout Grove

Stout Memorial Grove is a beautiful stand of redwoods in Northern California. The trail through the grove is short and sweet with access to the Smith River. We sat on the river bank and listened to the wind blow through the trees as the river ran lazy in the early fall.
I captured this image on the way back from the river.

Stout Grove

Imagine standing in a quiet forest where the air feels cool and earthy. Towering redwood trees rise straight up like massive pillars, their trunks wide and textured, stretching far beyond what you can see. The canopy above filters soft daylight, so the ground is bathed in a gentle, dappled glow.

A narrow dirt pathway winds through the grove, inviting you to walk deeper into the stillness. The trail feels calm and welcoming, framed by the immense trees on either side. In the distance, the forest seems endless, fading into layers of trunks and shadows.

The mood is serene and almost reverent — like stepping into a natural cathedral where the silence is broken only by the whisper of wind through leaves and the faint sound of the nearby river.
