I went to this Northwest Passage museum once where they had the white explorers' journals on one side of the exhibit and the native people's accounts on the other side of the exhibit and the explorer journals were like "our canoe had almost sunk when we encountered some kindly Indians" and the native histories were like "we watched a bunch of strangers come down the river in the shittiest canoe you'd ever seen. Also, they had no rain gear"

@mwl as long as they treat utf-8 as utf-8, then it's entirely the receipients problem.

@mwl Lenovo doubly pissed me off, because it was correct in my order, and in my shipping notification. I only noticed the discrepency when they sent me a crappy scan of the label when trying to track down the lost laptop.

@mwl also, fully expect your label print software to forcibly understand utf-8 as latin1 and screw up all of the special characters. that's an oldie and a goodie :).

might be good to pick out one or two subscribers (I predict Czech and Japanese) that you know will have non-latin1 chars and verify they match.

@mwl don't pull a Lenovo and "fix" my address after confirmation.

Protip from a hiring human: I often see #FediHire posts and I'd definitely like to BUT I rarely see person's country in the post. I'm less inclined to start a chat to find out where they are but if it is in the original post I would definitely get in touch if I could help. Why does it matter? Aren't we all remote now? Well there's a lot of hybrid now but mostly it's because me + most hirers can only hire within certain countries for legal reasons. Contracts, banking etc. Pls add location! 🙏 ❤️

Some of you protesting are far too into publicly posting identifiable pics and videos of folks in protest crowds without good reason.

If you brought a camera to the protest point it at the authorities, not your compatriots. Document and publicize incidents of abuse, but don't facilitate your fellow protestors being identified and punished for showing up. Assume every face you post will be recognized and catalogued. They're not there to be your photo op.
