You know what really pisses me off about the people who keep insisting on "peaceful protest" above all else?
They're dismissive of nonviolent tactics. For MLK's movement to succeed there was literally decades of drilling and training of activists. People like Rosa Parks studied theory and praxis, got trained, and enmeshed themselves in groups dedicated to wielding those tactics within a coherent strategy. The same is true for every other org, group, or movement that has been very successful with these tactics.
These nonviolent groups have also always coexisted with groups that employ violence working towards the same goal, and they have traditionally been extremely mindful in how they talk about those groups. A riot is the language of the unheard, after all.
There is a difference between nonviolent tactics chosen for specific reasons within a broader strategic context backed up by hard won discipline and "nonviolence" which is simply a fear of reprisal.
