Pom in Oz, I stare at firewall logs for a living. Recently promoted to senior tech, still don't know what I'm doing so faking it until I make it. Outside of work: computer games, scuba diving, martial arts and natural movement.

There is a new short domain name for #PuTTY!

putty.software/

At present, this is just a "landing page": a nice short name to remember, which will redirect you to the full PuTTY website at the same longer URL where it's always been.

But unlike putty.org or other third-party landing pages, this one is run by us, the actual PuTTY team, and it doesn't have a weird separate agenda of its own.

I intend to move the main PuTTY site over to that domain in the future, and leave just a redirector at the old location. But first I want to get the word out, so that people know which site to trust.

If anyone is still linking to putty.org, here's a place to link to instead. Please spread the word!

@cR0w your post will be shared with my team mates and we will (likely) cry-laugh

@nixCraft I'm a multi-decade user of Unix, BSD, and Linux which means I'm nostalgic for ethX naming, but at the same time I understand the need for deterministic naming of interfaces (Checkpoint firewall admins know /exactly/ what I'm talking about - there's a kb that talks you through pinning this MAC to that interface name).

So I'm conflicted. I prefer the old naming standard, but appreciate the new way means that interfaces don't "move around".

Not a fan of Linux distributions getting rid of ifconfig/arp/netstat though.

@kuroneko I think you've misunderstood what Paperless-ngx does:
- using a scanner, scan to a directory that paperless is monitoring
- paperless will OCR the document, and with some training auto-tag/categorize the document.

Or there's a webui that you can drop existing documents into.

And if you are struggling to install it, perhaps this will help: community-scripts.github.io/Pr

I'm sure you could edit it so that it works on whatever platform you need.

Please someone start a company that exclusively makes and sells electronics and appliances that don’t connect to the Internet.

Could call it “Luddite”.

“Hey how’s your new Luddite dishwasher?”—“Great, it washes dishes and never crashes!”

public response to the investigation: "oceangate spent all this R&D time and money to come up with this really fancy alerting system for detecting hull fractures, and when it alerted them to hull fractures they ignored the alert and kept operating regardless? what was the point of building it if they were just going to ignore the alerts? who even does that?"

@Viss spectacular bed shitting is my guess.

IIRC Rufus can make an install usb with less annoyances, and then privacy.sexy can finish the job.

@hacks4pancakes I both love and hate the centre aisle at Aldi because I walk in to buy a defined list of stuff and walk out with the defined list of stuff *and some extras I hadn't planned on*

I guess I need to work on my poor impulse control...

This conversation made me laugh

A screenshot of social media posts. The first post by Anna Baas (@venite) reads: "A friend learned COBOL and received a codebase where the last change was done in the 90s... by. his. mum." The second post by nobody (@imaguid) replies: "that's not how inheritance is supposed to work in programming"

@maldr0id Imagine how happy I was when I found that $Vendor TAC was now hidden behind a chat bot with no way to raise a TAC case without persuading the bot it was necessary...

And in our regular catch up with the vendor they mentioned that they'd heard that same feedback from multiple customers.
