@steevc Indeed. And what do they hope to get from our little presence on the web?
Over the last week or so we have experienced periods of sustained action by malicious bots that have impacted performance of the site. We have implemented some quite robust rate limiting and also had to block all access from Chinese IP addresses to try and get on top of it. Hopefully this will not impact genuine users. If you do get an error message about too many requests please do let us know.
We are back up and running after an upgrade to the latest version of BookWyrm. Everything looks ok, but please report any problems.
The Rambling Readers site will be unavailable today from 15:30 BST (14:30 GMT) for up to 60 minutes. This is to enable an upgrade to the latest version of BookWyrm.
@ramblingreaders Thanks so much for your awesome instance! The tutorial was great and showed me how to load in the other sources so I did import from OpenLibrary :) the other books, while borrowed from the public library, are ebooks from small publishers so that probably explains having to manually enter them. All good. Contributing makes everyone feel good π
@mariellequinton @marielle
Welcome to Rambling Readers. Bookwyrm doesn't have access to the proprietary publisher and ISBN databases and is reliant on open data sources such as OpenLibrary (and user contributions). If you can't find a book in an initial search be sure to click the link "Load results from other catalogues" that appears at the end of the search results. This will look for the book on other Bookwyrm instances and open book databases.
@mariellequinton I recommend @ramblingreaders, otherwise here is a list of all the instances https://joinbookwyrm.com/instances/
@Nic3 I've been using @bookwyrm for overa year now, and it's a great alternative to Goodreads, plus you can easily import your reading history. If you're looking for an instance I'd recommend @ramblingreaders
@swaldman
I'm on @ramblingreaders
Rambling Readers will be unavailable from 17:00 BST (16:00 GMT) for approximately 5 minutes to allow the server to be restarted as part of a reconfiguration.
@perkinsy @ramblingreaders might be an option, is where I want my account to be, but migration isnβt working so great in #Bookwyrm at the moment
@butterface
I use @ramblingreaders to track what I've read and post their link to the book.
@CultureDesk @bookstodon I love tracking my reading with BookWyrm on @ramblingreaders
@okwithmydecay yes, you'll get it automatically at the end of the year.
@okwithmydecay Thank you, very much appreciated.
I've just contributed to @ramblingreaders. Consider supporting them too β every little helps! https://opencollective.com/ramblingreaders
@kieranmcguire ok, thanks. If it's just a matter of editions of books with a different "parent" book then those can usually be merged to all come under the same parent.
@kieranmcguire there's no automated way to do either currently. If you can send details to admin@ramblingreaders.org we can correct some things directly in the database. Duplicate authors is usually unproblematic. Duplicate books is tricky and may not be possible, depending on what's already associated with the books.

I just opened ab account at @ramblingreaders of #bookwyrn. Seems to be a fast, friendly and well maintained instance, My nick there is @tinderness@ramblingreaders.org Thanks for visiting, will have set up everything in the coming week.
@phinken @okwithmydecay @OpenLibrary I am comfortable with cover images from the publishers' websites being used. Firstly, it is highly unlikely that a publisher would object to such a use, and secondly there is an exception in UK copyright law for criticism or review.
