@thathackergirl
Your examples make sense, but I get how some people just want to be where the crowd is.

And mass adoption comes from not having to think too hard about how something works.

Alot of people here, me included, are mindful and selective... kinda introverted... and at peace in the void.

It's inclusive, but it's finicky. That's not bad, but not for everyone.

I like Fedi. It's not complicated, but you have to want this kind of vibe.

At any rate, thanks for the examples.

Feel free to school me.

If you had a problem with alcohol or substance abuse, regardless of temptation or access, ultimately you, the individual would have to excercise discipline to overcome the addiction.

Why is social media any different. Algorithms and temptations will exist.

I just kinda got here, so I'm not locked in yet... but I don't have a problem checking out.

Not trying be insensitive, but where is the self accountability?

Tryna describe Fedi to my coworker. I lost him talking about instances.

I was like picture McDonald's. You could make a version called Mickey Dees. I could make the Golden Arches.

All of our coworkers could interact across franchises. We could even network with the Wendy's and Chipotles.

You can go to their stores right from your own without working at theirs.

It's an inclusive smorgasboard where you only need to be a member of any one to access them all.

This poster from bookthing.org was plastered all over their East Baltimore location back in the day.

After an unfortunate fire awhile back, they regrouped... but the schedule has changed a bit.

This is a great place to donate books and pick up some great books as well... for free.

Good people. Good stuff.

Poster stapled to a wooden post that reads:
We are open EVERY Saturday and Sunday 9am - 6pm including Christmas, New Years, Kwanza, the start of WWIII, the end of WWIII, Easter, Armageddon, the biggest blizzard of the year, the biggest blizzard of the century, perfect weather, the Rapture...

If you have the real estate to spare, I'd suggest storing them away for a bit.

When you rediscover them, you may have a new found interest in revisiting them.

That, or nostalgia may have increased their retail worth and you could sell for more than now.

I wish I still had my Magnavox waterproof portable C.D. player from the nineties. Not as good as mp3 players... but memories.

I am a licensed master electrician. For a few years recently I checked out of the trade.

Anyways, I told people for years that I don't and won't ever install Ring cameras.

Now I kind of feel vindicated.

Back in 2019, I was on a gig building an Amazon fulfillment center. That's when I learned they had centers in Baltimore already.
I worked in their centers intermittently from 2019 to 2024. I quit alot. It was designed for a high turnover so returning was easy.
The work wasn't hard but the favoritism and harrassment kept chasing me out.
I learned alot about how they operate.
I'll never go back now but for the troops still in there, I wish you luck.

@gbargoud
Advice taken. Thanks yet again. I'm planting your flag on this thread cuz you saved it twice.

2026-02-11

@gbargoud I'm keeping my error up so more people can fact check me. You're the hero of this thread.

2026-02-11

@gbargoud Thanks for keeping me honest. Last I heard, it was a done deal... but that was awhile ago.

In any case, we all know a little bit more about Roomba. Thanks again, though.

@eff
Amazon has been in the surveillance and data collection and data mining game for most of its years.

They even tried to buy Roomba, which exists to send 3d images of your floor plan back to h.q. under the guise of cleaning.

IOT was never about our convenience. It was always about surveillance.

Do people really not know these things or are they waiting for the bandwagon to feel some kind of way?

None of this is new.

Last thing I'll say about Buffy. On the show, sometimes they'd be in this club with some of the coolest alternative music.

The background music was a whole vibe.

That's where I first heard Mazzy Star. Good stuff.

@indiegenius
Buffy.
Great show.
Great actors and actresses.
Great character depth.
Every character had their own identity and they owned it.
Great series ending.

2026-02-11

On some stuff that matters to me, though...
I just watched Death Battle: Blade versus Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it was awesome.

I didn't realize how powerful Blade was, but I watched most of the Buffy series back in the day. She was the whole truth.

That was a great fight.

Plus Sarah Michelle Gellar sparred against Susan Lucci aka Erica Kane on All My Children back in the day and held her own. Love both of them.

Don't judge me.

A way I repurpose an old Android.

1. Wipe to factory settings.
2. Reconfigure all device settings offline.
3. Use public wifi to access F-Droid repository.
4. Download a dumb amount of F-Droid apps.
5. Take device offline.
6. Reset wifi settings.
7. Disable certificate authorities.
8. Set wrong date.

The last 2 make it harder for unwanted remote connections, excluding bluetooth and n.f.c..
To go back online, fix time and turn on certificate authorities.

Years ago, AWS homepage listed some of their clients... namely the central intelligence agency.

The central intelligence agency would not need to use a third party for their servers, nor would it be in their best security interests. If their data is on AWS servers, AWS is an extension of that agency.

Remember that old movie with O.J. Simpson called C.I.A.: Codename Alexa?

None of this is secret.

Feel free to fact check me.

@djohngo Everybody's body is different. I routinely do squats for my knees, shins and ankles because I want to run again.

I do dead hangs to just stretch and decompress my lumbar.

Yoga stretches works well for me.

The body type and pain points dictate what to go with. For me, the key was not to force anything, but to do what worked routinely.

Didn't get out of shape overnight. Won't get back in shape overnight. Had to incorporate practical routines in my overall lifestyle.

@stevendb
Good deal.
