A proposed wealth tax on Canada’s richest 0.6% could raise hundreds of billions of dollars — enough to tackle housing, transit, and care. The sheer scale of what a tiny slice of billionaire wealth could fund is staggering. #cdnpoli

Disabled people have fought for decades to get remote work accommodations.

They allow us to remain in the workforce longer.

They help us do our jobs while also taking care of our health.

The early days of Covid showed just how easily companies could make these accommodations happen, yet they were ripped away in favour of “back to normal”

The human rights tribunal of BC just found in favour of an immunocompromised employee! They ruled employers MUST accommodate remote work.

This is huge and precedent setting!

Time for some real talk: The Xylom, the only Asian American-run news outlet covering science, climate, and the environment, will run out of funding in July if we don't secure $7,500 by the end of the month. I might lose my job at a time while waiting for a visa extension — a nightmare scenario.

Edit: I posted this back in 2023 originally, but I thought we could all use a shot of niceness in this, our universe of fear and anger.

Feeling Boo-tee-full. Endearing and wonderful art from Nick Maskell. (Edit to add link to Nick's site: nickmaskell.com/ )

Four panel cartoon:
Panel 1: A ghost is floating up the stairs to the offices of a screen printer. There is a happy jack o lantern next to the stairs, and three leaves blowing in the wind.
Panel 2: The ghost is handing the gentleman who does screenprinting some money. (We know he does screenprinting by the apron with color splotches, and he's wiping his hand on a color stained rag.)
Panel 3: The ghost is in the screen print machine, and the printing man is squeegying ink through the print screen onto the ghost.
Panel 4: Ghost has magenta tattoos of flowers and butterflies and stars and moons and snakes and bees and birds.
Ghost and man are both happy, ghost has happy eyes and a green floaty heart, and the man is smiling and doing the thumbs-up sign.

@cstross

There was no shortage of Gestapo and SS officers who had no problem switching between brutalizing their victims during their day jobs, and into the role of "loving family man" in the evenings and on weekends.

Their kids only started asking: "What did you do during the Third Reich" when they became adults, studied at universities, and were exposed to more diverse points of views. This was a huge part of what fueled the student protests in Germany in the 1960s.

Until then, most children will probably believe that their ICE father is a "good man" who "stops bad people".

"The authoritarian dream is rooted in the belief that state violence should serve as the primary tool of governance. ...

What we are witnessing is a spectacle of domination. The deployment of troops, the vigilante targeting of Democratic lawmakers, the planned grotesquerie of Trump’s military parade, and Trump’s order for ICE to target cities led by Democrats are not isolated events — they are scenes in the same authoritarian drama."

It turns out "my" shirt design was stolen and used by some US assholes who now sell a Rob Anybody t-shirt.
I can't do anything about that, except giving everybody the design for free - if it has to be out there, nobody should profit from it.
If you end up using it, please PLEASE donate to one of Pratchett's favorite charities or at least to somebody in need.
And add a #GNUTerryPratchett line somewhere, maybe?

“Can this person prototype new paradigms, not just iterate existing ones?”

Show you invent new kinds of tools and representations, not just polish what exists.

Pick a cognitive bottleneck (e.g., how people compare, learn, or organize information). Create a UI that solves it in a radically new way.

Compress the big idea into a short video or visual walkthrough that evokes:

“Whoa, I never thought of it that way but it makes sense.”

If you think ICE is bad now, you need to understand what this regime is doing and has planned in the very near future. You may need to take a moment and a deep breath before you read this, but it is critical that we remain clear-eyed about the dangers and laser focused on defeating their efforts. See replies for a link to my piece.

Times it is OK to bomb working hospitals:

There. My exhaustive list of (checks notes) zero times.

Y’all. I work in a hospital. I work on ambulances. You aren’t gonna find some trolley problem or confounding ethical reason to convince me that smoking me and my patients is cool. Once you open the door to the “but this one time…”, all times become that one time. Fuck off.

[Over] 4,400 Black people killed in racial terror lynchings 1877 - 1950 are remembered here. Their names are engraved on more than 800 corten steel monuments—1 for each county where a racial terror lynching took place—that form the main structure of the memorial at the heart of this six-acre site."
