on further reflection, this IS a servers-as-cattle game if you're playing it well. each of the ~80 npc-owned servers is a pet for that company, but once you have root access on all of them, you really have to automate telling them what to do :P

(that's the fun part)

@lmorchard what a face!

2025-11-09

now I'm thinking about what a servers-as-cattle hacking sim would look like and it does kinda suck all the character out of it, doesn't it

2025-11-08

But only the aesthetic, the code writing is in modern Javascript which is pretty nice actually lol.

I mean, *I* would enjoy doing it in shell but I think I'm probably in a minority.

TIL that in the cyberpunk programming game/hacking sim Bitburner, the buff you get from injecting nanobots into your character's bloodstream is improved by players donating blood IRL. Send the dev a photo showing you did it, nanobots get stronger for everyone.

That's kind of metal. I love it.

(Bitburner's on steam. If you're nostalgic for the fiction aesthetic of an era when hackers were hackers and servers were pets, I recommend it.)

@lmorchard (we do our best to lay out explicitly what candidates are getting into, but I think the folks with primarily support backgrounds still expect to be able to wing it by talking about concepts in general terms, and: they can't.)

2025-11-05

@lmorchard I work in support for a product that's technical enough that our support interviews involve writing and reading code, and let me tell you, this is not easier when "help a new person understand the system" is part of your job description. ๐Ÿ˜‚

we trained a teammate on giving the interview recently and he was like "wow watching someone bomb feels awful." yes, yes it does. ๐Ÿ˜…

@mwichary I can easily imagine Beatrix Potter characters using these

2025-11-01

literally any other day of the year a box of candy on the sidewalk would be so sketch, but today I'm like, hell yeah I'll take a butterfingers

best chex flavor?

2025-11-01

@numberless oh that looks fun ๐Ÿ‘€

@newsmast why the hell don't you respect tags in profiles?

now my only option to keep you from parroting me against my explicit wishes is to block your whole domain

even if the description is true that there's a thoughtful group of humans at the helm somewhere, you're acting like spammers and forcing me to treat you like spammers

I'm not news. I'm a private individual. leave me the hell out of your announcement feed

not posting the definition because then some idiot will say the word and ruin it

2025-10-31

is anyone doing any tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon research at the moment? I can currently get into that state at will by trying to remember a specific technical term (outside my field) which I can easily define and definitely know but haven't been able to recall for weeks.

I haven't looked it up because I don't actually need it for anything, but I know it's tricky to induce this on purpose. so if you need a tott research subject, let me know. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon @HalloweenBot I looked at it and thought "wait, it's earl-wait." and checked the calendar. maybe I need last minute human intervention.

@jamey if it helps it's pretty disheartening for businesses too

@jamey it's on my reread-every-few-years list to refresh my memory. not everything in it resonates, but there's a few kernels that stick with me.
