Inline skating the mean streets of NYC since 1993 and still alive to kvetch about it.
During the day, webmaster for some scientists, Java netCDF dataviz and cartography coder.
Otherwise, a Jack Methodist, somewhere left of center and (sigh) a recovering Idahoan.
Plus various experiences and opinions of no merit.
@EthicalProfessor @benlockwood Scum rises to the top.
@dangillmor Once the UK's lease expired, it was simply a matter of time before Beijing demonstrated total control. Almost 30 years now, which, slow but inexorable.
@sundogplanets Looks like excellent inline skating territory.
It was too cold to go inline skate in #NYC today, so I got out the camera and wandered over to #CentralPark. Hadn't been in the park more than a minute before I first saw a red-tailed hawk. Then another. Here are two photos of the latter.
No, just a plain old TV (flatscreen but no internet connection) on which I haven't watched "over the air" channels in IDK how long. I did find the primary NBC channel, so now I just hope to catch races live rather than the cr(rec)ap mix that they air later.
Reminding myself how to watch over-the-air TV, because I ditched cable so many years ago, but the Winter Olympics are happening and I'm hoping to catch some #SpeedSkating
@doggo @Cat_LeFey It's someone ignoring the point of your toot and just correcting your grammar, pointing out that you typed "their" or maybe "there" when you meant "they're".
I know I say this every year, but man, it seems like this winter is really doing a job on the state of #NYC city streets.
@Grass One of the first spots I noticed in NYC to be plowed after the storm a week+ ago was the Amsterdam Ave bikelane, so NYC has that capability. OP's photo is of some fancy avenue too good to have bikelanes.
@lzg Do they really want to get into what Helen's dad did to get at her mother? It would make the Epstein files look sane.
@svenvabar Africa is looking pretty sparse.
@victor When there's so much ice on the river, it could be good eagle watching in Riverside or Inwood Hill Park. They fly down from upriver where ice is preventing them from catching fish. I remember seeing them hanging around on the ice off IHP back in 2015.
@pmcg @victor The last time the Hudson froze over so that one could cross from Manhattan to Hoboken was supposedly 1821. Apparently the Tappan Zee used to freeze over relatively often, although I haven't read when that last happened.
As for the East River, it froze over so badly in 1866-1867 that ferries couldn't cross, and the state decided that it might be a good idea to build a bridge.

@tiffanycli Went there. Woke up, checked my portfolio, and Cheetoh TACOed out so I was up for the day. So at least I can still ponder retirement.
Really thinking I should revert to my 2017-2020 news and social feeds, when I followed nothing, nada, and no way. Because wow, it's so much worse now.
@dangillmor @briankrebs Didn't someone once threaten to prosecute Al Gore for making some political phone calls while in a government office? Long time ago. I don't remember the details.
@MaryAustinBooks Crap, I skated right by that moron when he was standing in Times Square holding that sign up. Meant to shout, "That's okay, he's my mayor", but alas.
About last night.
I haven’t got to processing the short time lapse yet, so here’s a small taste. #CabinLife #Nunavut #Aurora #AuroraBorealis
