It allows you to create your own set of properties, here in the example for the metadata fields that can also be used in InDesign for the alternate text. And you can also insert fields for your own metadata.

@xmlarbyter Nach meinem Verständnis wird target="_blank" bei Fußnoten einfach ignoriert und bei Links nach »draußen« öffnen diese ohnehin im Browser, wird nicht benötig, stört aber auch nicht weiter. Aber beim span-Element resultiert es eben in diesem Validierungsfehler.
