Found some salt and pepper shakers with @davidrevoy energy

Two sets of novelty ceramic salt and pepper shakers, one with two peas in a pod and the other with amanita mushrooms. The peas in a pod have eyes and blush, which makes them look like frogs recently depicted in David's comics.

@Ashedryden I do! Boil a box of macaroni in salt water with olive oil, drain and add back in a third cup of the pasta water, a thick pad of butter, and a half cup of shredded Parmigiano-Reggiano. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a thick cheesy sauce forms, them sprinkle in a third cup of shredded mild cheddar or Gouda and stir again, gently. If you like your bowl really cheese-yellow, you can stir some yellow seasoning into the set aside pasta water before reincorporating it. Enjoy!

ACM is now showing an AI “summary” of a recent paper of mine on the DL instead of the abstract. As an author, I have not granted ACM the right to process my papers in this way, and will not. They should either roll back this (mis)feature or remove my papers from the DL.

@yomimono @maxleibman as a sighted person, I like the idea that I could read in the dark, or while I keep my eyes on something. Reading in a car or on the bus tends to make me sick, but I imagine I might be able to read braille text comfortably if I got good enough. My reading speed is so poor though, I don't read braille for content/enjoyment. If I forced myself to, I like to think I'd get faster quick, but it's frustrating to read by touch only, I frequently give into temptation to use my eyes

@yomimono @maxleibman I was interested in the challenge, and as I got going I found it really engaging. I bought a few books in braille and practiced reading, and I got a brailling tablet to practice writing. I don't know any blind braille readers, so I don't really know how correct/idiomatic my usage of level 2 braille is. I feel like that would be a good next step in my study. I also like the idea of a braille computer, but they're real spendy and don't seem to be coming down in price.

what's hostile alt text you ask?

it's when you don't actually describe what's in the image. it includes; just a joke, endless hashtags and/or emojis, extensive URLs, just a period, the file name of the image,....

I hope this helps clear things up

alt text on your picture of your cat could literally just be "my cat" and that's good enough. it's not great but you achieved the bare minimum—describing what's in the photo.

what it should not be is: "lol look at this silly guy" or "wow what a pose" or "fuzzball" or "this one time I took this picture and I thought it was so good so I wanted to share it with you"

@Natasha_Jay is this your photograph? Looks pretty visually improbable to me. The ground on the left of Mama cat is abruptly different from that on her right. The kitten paw print is further out into the snow than a kitten's reach and is accompanied by no other prints.

If you like music and/or coding, or indeed have never been much into either, you need #algorave It's like cooking a communal meal where none of you know what it's going to be, but most of the fun is trying out the weird combinations of flavours and just being in the kitchen stirring the pan with other people – even if you're using an internet spoon to do it with.

Here's a fantastic explanation by @TodePond of what it is and why it's important in an age when we're increasingly under pressure to forget that we're human. Warning: will make your brain hurt, but in a good way.

@cassidy I would welcome a simple app that does this. What I have instead is a Docker container that accepts text and emits WAV output, which works but is not convenient. I haven't put the effort in to create a nice app wrapper for that; I keep hoping somebody else will, or that it'll just become a feature of the OS. I'd love to be able to just right click -> "read to me" (as long as it's all done locally)

@cassidy I like to use text-to-speech to read work correspondence back to me, because after I've just written something I can't receive if it has an unintended "tone," I can only read it in the tone I intended. But if I hear the same text spoken out loud it somehow gets through that barrier.
