If this is true it does not bode well for the future.
If an improvement in technology is going to lead to a loss in productivity until there is a sufficient human body of work for AI to learn from, then that technology won't be used.
And we will end up stagnating. Especially if our skill level drops as we rely more and more on ai.

Unfortunately it‘s not only kids… „Something easier than thinking“ captures my feelings about LLMs very well.

This is so exciting! The German National Library of Medicine @ZBMED just had its first open meeting on the plan for an open and independent PubMed safety net. Here's my write-up @PLOS on the meeting & how institutions & others can help: https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2025/05/14/germanys-plan-for-an-open-and-independent-pubmed-safety-net/

Updated: I donated to the University of Michigan for years after a fellowship there. After a lapse I was planning to start again, to support institutions that are standing against fascism.
Not another nickel until the new U-Mich president signs on..
Everyone agrees something needs to be done about our total dependence on US clouds. But what? And who should do it? Ample words have been written on the 'why', and we also have a lot of text on our values and that *someone* should do *something*. Here I elaborate on an earlier suggestion with a coherent strategy that is concrete enough to disagree with. This reads well with the latest Euro-Stack letter also: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/a-coherent-non-us-cloud-strategy/

@ShadSterling I was so mad about it that I spent a lot of time writing a letter to the editor about it.
Turns out, when you do that, you get an e-mail back that states "We will contact you within 15 days of receipt of your submission if we intend to follow it up. If you do not hear from us in that time, we regret that we shall not be pursuing it further."
I didn't hear back 🤷, so I put it here on mastodon:

@ShadSterling @annaleen 🤦♂️ Of course, I forgot.
You might get access to Nature through a library close to you, though: https://search.worldcat.org/title/782896192
@annaleen Well, Nature says that even reviewers no longer have to read papers and should use AI instead: https://doi.org/10.1038/d41586-025-00526-0
The papers that reviewers are supposed to review are nowadays probably written by AI anyway... 🤪 😒
