@starriverikebana That's funny, because from the eye of a graphic designer this is incredibly interesting.

People who have no* understanding of race and ethnicity feel entitled to ownership of the (pop) culture of people they might identify with on an aesthetic level.

This is definitely the stupidest thing I've ever said, but after seeing people like Gwen Stefani claim to be Japanese I feel like I kinda understand why Japan is so paranoid about letting foreigners in.

Watched NOPE.
Liked it.

Modern fascists around the world all follow the same playbook.

1. Lie nonstop

2. Be an intentionally hypocritical troll at all times

3. Attack your capitol and rub your feces on the walls when you lose an election

Studying anti-blackness will show you how to identify so many isms and phobias because most, if not all are offshoots of it.

It's all about dehumanization to justify unacceptable behavior.

To be clear, there would be no 'drama' or 'incidents' if bigots left me alone. I do not go after people I dislike because I have better things to do with my time.

But that's the thing about bigots. They cannot get the affirmation they need in their communities because they don't even like each other. That's why they harass us.

I am especially disliked in my particular case because I don't take people's bullshit whenever they feel like dishing it out. And in many parts of the fedi, not deferring to white people who behave terribly is a worse offense than the behavior itself.

People can say whatever they want about me, but the reality is that people that have a problem with me don't like Black folks advocating for themselves and our safety.

The math on this one is very uncomplicated.

@cclareMDMPH It's really just a matter of time. The more you post, the more "you" you become. Building the right audience is also key. (I'm on some pretty radical instances, so my anti-racist rants go over real well there.)

Without meaningful repercussion, a failed coup attempt is just a training exercise.

They are not above terrorism. It's how they gained power the first time.

In public, you almost have to show they you are for or against this or that—but online, nobody can see you. You can get away with turning a blind eye with no shame.

A racist is easy: you can condemn them and move on, and get right back to blissful ignorance.

But an actual minority (or other marginalized person) is much more difficult than dealing with the racist. You have to bear witness. You have to bear the burden of painful knowledge.

The oppressed takes more energy—more empathy—than the oppressor.

And because of this, somewhere deep inside, you start to shrink away from them, from their burden, from their cursed experience. You just want to get back to your peace and quiet.

And online, it's the easiest thing in the world to just tune them out.

Don't got to see nothing.
Don't got to say nothing.

I genuinely think people online are happier to cringe and ignore blatant racism than they are to hear out the plight of people affected by it.

The world has always seen me in a certain way. It's had ceilings on its expectations of me since I was a small boy. But in school my teachers were able to see what was inside me. They'd tell me that it was valuable, too.
This is one of the reasons I value education so much.

The conservative opposition to immigration is founded heavily on the supposition that inclusion of foreign people with foreign beliefs will necessarily lead to conflict and social decay. But maybe these very misgivings set the stage for a reluctant, antagonistic reception of foreigners, which in turn creates the kind of atmosphere that will leave newcomers feeling unwelcome and antagonized upon the very moment of their introduction to the culture.

@pippa Go ahead and put his Jimmy Dean sausage in the freezer for a week or two and let him think on his words.

If anyone ever tries to convince you that your nation would be better served by a private health insurance system, rather than having government managed healthcare, that person is your enemy. They are trying to kill you.

Computers used to scream out in pain when we connected them to the Internet.

This was a clue and we just didn't listen.

I'm gonna talk about it when you're having a good day.
And when you're having a bad day.
I'll talk about it on MLK day.
I'll talk about it when you're not in the mood.
