Calvin and Hobbes comic featuring the titular characters who comprise respectively a little boy with spikey blonde hair and a tall tiger who are stood outside staring at the starry night sky pensively. The speech bubble from Calvin reads, "IF PEOPLE SAT OUTSIDE AND LOOKED AT THE STARS EACH NIGHT, I'LL BET THEY'D LIKE A LOT DIFFERENTLY."

Hat tip to John Kemp for admitting that he was wrong to blame Spain's blackout on excessive reliance on inverter-based renewables and insufficient inertia, and ๐Ÿ‘ for his very decent explainer on what actually happened. jkempenergy.com/2025/06/19/spa

Fun fact: If you see someone at a nerd event wearing a vim-themed shirt, it's because they put it on in 2003 and couldn't figure out how to take it off

"A cyclist can go 3 or 4 times faster than a pedestrian, but uses 5 times less energy. The bicycle is the perfect transducer to match metabolic energy to impedance of locomotion. Equipped with this tool, man outstrips efficiency of not only all machines, but all other animals as well."

Last week, the vintage IBM 1401 computer at the Computer History Museum started behaving strangely: it wouldn't halt. More specifically, if you had two HALT instructions in a row, it would halt for the first, but when you continued, it crashed mysteriously. Here's how we fixed it.... 1/N

The IBM 1401 is a vintage computer about the size of two refrigerators. It has dark gray panels with blue and chrome trim. In the upper left, a control panel has numerous lights and buttons. The large line printer is visible in the foreground. A tape drive with two reels of tape is in the background.

Instead of using butter with your garlic bread, you should switch to Linux. You can set up a virtual machine to try out various distros to see which one works best for your needs.

The Fediverse is a great idea in theory, in practice its user hostility will perennially hold it back from mass adoption. Especially as many of its proponents consider gaps like lack of algorithmic discovery of content or people to follow as features not bugs.

Itโ€™s Linux on the desktop of social apps.

Millions of degrees hot off the press โ€“ first results from ESA's PROBA-3 mission, using two spacecraft separated by 150 metres to create artificial solar eclipses.

This makes it possible to trace the solar corona close to the surface of the Sun on a routine basis, not just during actual eclipses.

Congratulations to the PROBA-3 team ๐Ÿ‘

A multi-coloured high-energy image of the Sun, comprising parts taken by three satellites, each sensitive to a different part of the Sun and its extended corona. The inner part shows the disk of the Sun in yellow; the middle part is green showing the inner corona; the outer part is reddish, showing the more distant corona.

Enormous long shot.
I lost my necklace today (Sunday June 15th 2025).
Probably somewhere in Brussels during the #IkTrekEenRodeLijn #RodeLijn manifestation.
It was a custom made present from my wife.
If anyone found this, or sees it posted as found somewhere, please contact me! ๐Ÿ˜ข
