Fun to be with, but not actually made of plastic.

@lemba Look in the mirror, see a projector...

Also, I reported your reply and you are to stop with the BS, mmmkay?

@noracodes I agree about Bsky boosters. OTOH, fedi is failing badly in some easily fix-able UX categories. The attitude in the related Mastodon issues is "gosh, this would be easy to do if we could agree someday". Most non-techie users care not one wit if the thing thats running them off the rails into odd conundrums (like landing on an alien instance web page and "why did Mastodon forget who I am? should I sign up here too?") is easy to fix... they leave for more usable social networks.

Hong Kong police have detained the father of Anna Kwok, an activist living in exile in the US.

"It is the first time Hong Kong authorities have charged a family member of a wanted activist under the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, more commonly known as Article 23."

@lemba Why do I "need help"? I've been using bluetooth on Linux for 15 years.

I have a couple very simple audio speakers that used to pair fine 7-8 months ago, and now what I see in the bt errors and UIs is a shitstorm of nonsense. Like bluetoothctl now shows device names only sometimes, depending on the device type or mfg. That means I can no long see my speakers because I don't know what their hex values are (it shows the names of other devices, though.... totally f-ing moronic). If I use bluedevil UI it shows the name but fails with a permissions error.

Its no problem from Android or any other OS. Desktop Linux is such a huge f-ing waste of time.

@tasket @killminus9 it’s a cool idea! NuttX is weird but very fast, and reminds me of a very barebones BSD in a lot of ways. I’d love to give HyperOS a try and see how it feels, but I don’t think I have any hardware that supports it, unfortunately.

I’m aware there’s a PinePhone OS that’s based on NuttX too. I also don’t have that hardware, but that’s another one I’d love to try out if I could too.

@zzt @killminus9 What do you think about Xiaomi HyperOS 2? They are using NuttX to run an Android userland.

I’m sitting here trying to brainstorm a name for a NuttX distro and all ideas are being drowned out by my brain going “name it rawdog. people will fucking love running some shit named Rawdog NuttX on their computing devices”

The "Linux Desktop" bluetooth support has become total and complete garbage! What is the excuse for even including a subsystem that fails 100% of the time?

@avdi LibreWolf, but it comes with the goofy default setting that deletes all cookies on exit. (I think its better to save cookies and let the browser do FPI.)

I wrote a bit more about the unanswered questions and issues raised by Mike Waltz's use of a Signal fork that archives messages, which we broke news of yesterday: 404media.co/behind-the-blog-th

Here, it's at minimum eyebrow raising that an app being used to archive
messages sent by the U.S. government's top officials, including the Vice
President judging by the Reuters photo, has a presence in a country that has
historically spied on the U.S. There are other examples but check out this
Politico piece that opens with “The U.S. government concluded within the past
two years that Israel was most likely behind the placement of cellphone
surveillance devices that were found near the White House and other sensitive
locations around Washington, according to three former senior U.S. officials with
knowledge of the matter.” It's not at all hard to imagine Israel taking an interest in
the archiving feature of the Trump administration's Signal messages with this in
mind!

@MishaalRahman Probably long overdue. This will be the "Linux Desktop", true and proper.

"Third Party Cookies Must Be Removed" has been published as a W3C Draft finding by @tag

"Third-party (AKA cross-site) cookies are harmful to the web, and must be removed from the web platform. This finding explains why they must be removed, and examines the challenges in removing them. We highlight some use cases that depend on third-party cookies and offer some examples of designed-for-purpose technologies that can replace them."

@YKantRachelRead I started at #fosstodon. Within a week, I had about 20 toots directed at me that were homophobic and violent. I reported each one. Instead of fixing the problem, I was told by admins it was me and that I needed thicker skin. The next week I had almost triple the number of hateful and violent toots directed at me. I left and tried to get the instance #fediblocked. I was told by the wider community I was overreacting and that Fosstodon was not that bad.
