While yesterday was Father’s day we’re going to try something new at TerraReef. Happy Mother Colony Monday!
This Green Candy Cane coral has been growing in our systems since about July 2007. We likely have at least another 20 colonies growing elsewhere in our building and even more in our service client’s tanks. They are very hardy and adaptable corals. Great for beginner hobbyist!

These corals may be called cup coral, pagoda coral, turban coral, scroll coral, or vase coral depending on their growth pattern which is largely influenced by the flow and lighting they experience while growing.
We prefer scientific names when possible, but even that is a bit of a gray area. Genetic work supports calling them Duncanopsammia peltata, though they were Turbinaria peltata.

@kellyromanych it is important to use strong language to get attention and inspire action but it is also important to stick with the facts. If someone like the press or public figures are caught misrepresenting information, not understanding the topic, or flat out lying they lose the credibility of their voice. A lot of the recent press talks about coral bleaching. Bleached coral can recover. It is extremely weak and vulnerable when it is bleached, but it isn't yet dead.

We recently added several corals back in stock on the site including both purple and green Montipora digitata (for sale as both stock and WYSIWYG coral frags). These are often just called “digis”. Both varieties we have been growing since at least 2011! These are both great additions to the tanks of advanced SPS collectors and happen to be pretty hardy for those who are just starting to try a few SPS.
