@ryanopaz as the Chair or a local civic society, these platforms are a very important part of delivering our services (connection, news, events, ...) so they are still important and we can't go back to "word of mouth in the local pub" to organise a diverse and busy local audience, unfortunately.

I don't NEED it myself, but I benefit from the easy social connections

@ryanopaz or is the lesson that we need the platforms, and they will always tend towards becoming criminal and corrupt ... so we either need to keep moving, or find a new way to organise ... but we will now probably always need *somewhere*

Mastedon, Pixelfed, Bluesky - Feels like 2008 when we were all trying to find the micro blog that would take over from all the others...we fought and fought to gain traction and when we finally got it the corporations became corrupt and criminal...what platforms might win? Or is the lesson that maybe we don't need these platforms?

Here’s a new poem called ‘To Be Pacific’.

To Be Pacific

Why do you always go off on a tandem,
say goodbye without further adieu?
It’s time you climbed down from your pedal stool –
this is not a phrase you’re going through,

when antidotal evidence suggests
you’ve been freewheeling right from the start.
Or rather, from the gecko, as you might say.
You’re always upsetting the apple tart.

I can’t be asked to correct you these days:
it takes two to tangle, I won’t deny it.
But when push comes to shovel and all’s set and done,
I just want a little piece of quiet,

to curl myself up in the feeble position
so I can give my poor ears some rest bite
from these sayings which do not pass mustard,
the flaws in the ointment you cite.

You’re no escape goat or social leopard;
I don’t regard you as a hapless case.
But be aware there are reaper cushions
when you cut off your nose despite your face.

While its likely too early to draw conclusions about how the far right rioters will be dealt with (with only a small minority sentenced so far), the Equality Trust *do* sum up an emerging concern expressed here (and elsewhere).

#riots #farright #ruleoflaw

Graphic: Town-tier policing?
Lets compare:
5 years in jail for a Juts Stop Oil zoom call;
2 months in jail for racist rioting

Am expected in Barcelona for an event in November. Excited to be there and see the team.

But, ... getting there from London?

Around ÂŁ100 for a round-trip flight

Around ÂŁ400 for a round trip train ticket

Ouch!

Any suggestions? I've not explore the world of railcards yet

Car has hit railings by HOP station again (at least third time in recent years like this). Hope no one was hurt on this occasion but surely time to consider traffic calming ⁦@LewishamCouncil⁩ 🤦‍♂️

If you plan to do the same, let me know ... and feel free to share the idea more widely to help others in the fight to reclaim our inboxes from virtual overload ;)

It is almost that time of year where I have to declare "email bankruptcy"

My personal email has 2400+ unread emails (in Primary) and countless others in secondary mailboxes.

The only sensible way to deal with it is to declare and mark them all as read and remove them from the inbox, and start again in January.

Does anyone else do this to preserve their sanity?

OK, this is pretty cool and I didn't realise it was even a thing

Giving our railways a new lease of life as faster transport options (to remove flying) would be pretty cool

@felisramblious I thought it might be a light issue. London, even in this south facing window is not ideal for them, I'm sure.

Thanks for this. Will try repotting and light. Fingers crossed

Looking for advice. Anyone here an expert?

I bought a cheap cactus some years ago, which eventually I tried to repot but sections got rot. I managed to save some segments by planting them separately in small pots.

Now, they've gone crazy (height around 2 feet, curling tips). What do I do next? Are these salvageable? Repot together somehow?

When we bought our Kia e-Niro 2 years ago tomorrow, the guesstimate of 12,000mi/year was clearly pretty accurate (my wife is adding 260mi today, so that will be accurate to within 100mi).

As you can see, it's been very cheap to run, and as a bonus we've never run out of charge, and only once in two years has finding a charger proved a hassle. During that time, electricity prices have varied a lot (as has fuel), but as you can see, a cheap EV tariff for home charging has kept the running costs down. The final figure is based on the cost per mile at current rates if charging at home. With petrol currently at ÂŁ1.59/litre, that's the current equivalent of over 350mpg.

It's not fashionable to talk about consuming less as a climate solution because our economy is based on selling us crap that no one needs.

It's a fucking toaster that has a touchscreen for selecting one of 34 different kinds of bread to toast and costs $400.

This was a very useful video. I had heard about a connection between sea warming and container ships' fuel, but not quite grasped the science. This is great context and, as usual, a great call to action
