TikTok is investing 1 billion euros in Finland as part of a 12 billion investment in “data centres and data privacy improvements across Europe over the next decade as part of the Clover project. The centres will store European user data, with oversight from EU authorities, to address concerns about Chinese government access.”
#Finland stakeholders were not involved in the plans and surprised by the news.

@osma I’m (unfortunately) very familiar with the catch re: building/service lock-ins, but they never offered free service in the US.
@osma I believe it’s 200 Mbps + cable TV channels. No cost. No long term contact. No hidden junk. Just free if you need it.
And we don’t have a long term contract with our paid plan either, so I could switch to another service if I really had to. It’d just need to be a wireless one. 😉

Our housing block offers free internet (not shared; a free service you can sign up for with the same provider), but the speed is a bit too slow for work and a family of three. It's awesome that it's an option though.
@sumisu3 It's not perfect (nothing is), but overall life has been very good to us in Finland. The change of pace alone was worth the move.

It's crazy to think that two years ago in California we were spending $265.29/month for 1 Gbps internet + cable TV + equipment + fees/taxes + hidden fees. PER MONTH!
Now we're spending 34,90 €/month for the same speed + better service + a ton of free channels. We also cut all but one of our streaming subscriptions ages ago.
Anyway. Finding that the longer I'm in Finland, the less I want/need things beyond the basics.
Alko is experimenting with discounting expiring beer to reduce its waste/environmental impact. Sounds great, however, the impact is questionable, -20% is closer to where the actual price of beer should be in Finland, and certain brands don't sell for many reasons.
Perhaps it's time to reevaluate buying, pricing, and marketing techniques to avoid the need to discount or destroy beer. (I was also a record/game buyer in a previous life. Hit me up.)

@rolle Just in case, I traded in my California driver’s license before to two year deadline. Didn’t want to have to deal with starting from scratch. But I walk everywhere. Take public transit as needed. Feels good.
@rolle Sold our car before moving to Finland two years ago. Haven’t needed one since and don’t intend to own one again.
Spent the day doing some light coding and admin stuff on BeerAdvocate, researching Linux distros, and browsing PCs.
