I lead the Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC (2011-present) which are the same org and mission but with different financial structure.

Since 1993 I have been collecting & sharing ideas others can use to fight poverty & inequality & help volunteer-based tutor/mentor orgs in Chicago area grow in more places (including the single tutor/mentor program I led from 1993 to 2011).

Since 1993 I've tried to combine maps and data to show where volunteer-based tutor, mentor and learning programs are most needed in Chicago, and where existing programs are located. This article is one example. tutormentor.blogspot.com/2023/

I share this in an on-going effort to motivate leaders from every sector to share the stories and help draw support to existing programs, while helping new programs grow where the maps and data show more are needed.

This is a graphic on a Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC (2011-present) blog article that focuses attention on the North Lawndale area of Chicago. The map shows what, if any, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs are in the area, and the data from the Chicago Community Data Portal, shows economic opportunity in the area.

My only wish is to be reborn a hundred years from now and be able to see how historians write about this time period.

Maybe I should wait 200 years.

I included this graphic in an article posted at tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/

The circle in the lower graphic represents "all that is known" about a specific problem. In this case, helping kids in high poverty areas move through school.

The circle in the upper graphic represents a youth, or a tutor/mentor program, showing long-term support provided by tutors, mentors, etc from different background.

On each spoke is a circle emphasizing the need for people to share info in their networks.

This shows two related graphics created by Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) in the 1990s. The top shows the design of a mentor-rich program where volunteers from many backgrounds help kids through school and into jobs and careers.

The lower graphic shows how these volunteers can point their own friends and networks to libraries that show where these programs are most needed, why, and ways volunteers, business, philanthropy and others can help programs grow and reach k-12 youth in more places.

Heather Cox Richardson, in her newsletter, reminded me of these words from John Lewis, who wrote them one year before his death, five years ago, yesterday:

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.” — John Lewis

It's hard to hold on to the sentiment at times these days but we can try

I sent my monthly newsletter today. It's online at tutormentorexchange.net/2025-n

If you've seen the eMail version, or view pre April 2025 issues online, you'll see that the July online version has a different layout. That's because putting the email version on the website the way I was prior to upgrading my Joomla was not formatting very well.

If anyone has a one-column template that I might try next month, send it to me.

This is the July 2025 eMail newsletter of Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC (2011-present). This issue shows the new look for some of the pages. It also continues to share resources from the on-line library.

@Algot We told volunteer tutors and mentors that they needed to trust that they were having an impact, because they might not see it immediately. Educators need to have this belief as well. I'm sure many do.

I saw this post by Prison Policy Institute on Twitter and BlueSky. I shared it on my blog and showed how I do this to help boost attention for the information they share. Do the same! tutormentor.blogspot.com/2025/

In this post on the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC blog I show how I draw attention to information I see on social media, such as this post by the Prison Policy Institute, LLC.
