I lead the Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC (2011-present) which are the same org and mission but with different financial structure.

Since 1993 I have been collecting & sharing ideas others can use to fight poverty & inequality & help volunteer-based tutor/mentor orgs in Chicago area grow in more places (including the single tutor/mentor program I led from 1993 to 2011).

A farewell to Rob Paterson

Rob, from a recent Facebook of his which he captioned "The new me." My friend Rob Paterson is dying. I found out on Facebook today as he shared a remarkable thing that his daughter is doing. Rob was one of those bloggers that you'd meet sometimes in the early 2000s who posted tons of interesting stuff, and thoughtful, place based and personal posts.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Aug. 8 that a pause in the russia-Ukraine war could happen soon, after holding a phone call with President Zelenskyy.

💬 "There are certain signals... that perhaps a freezing of the conflict – I don’t want to say the end of the war, but a freezing of the conflict – could happen sooner rather than later" -Tusk

Crap. I went to my favorite Blackout Poetry maker on Glitch, only to find out that Glitch has pulled the plug on it and other project apps.

Thanks to @toddconaway for this powerful multimedia essay, “What Happened? Twitter, COVID, Remote Work and Loss.” Read the essay:

This encourages me to NOT give up on my desire to serve as a catalyst for an EdCamp community here in Charlotte, NC.

Here's another page on the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC website, where I point to blog articles related to that topic. tutormentorexchange.net/leader

This shows a section on the Tutor/Mentor Connection (1993-present) and Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC (2011-present) website. Click on the "leadership strategies" link in the left sidebar and it opens to a page with two articles showing roles leaders in business, professions, sports, etc. can take to help volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs grow in more places.

I've circled a line that points visitors to the most recent blog article on that topic.

@mgifford

That trust of private companies is the root of many social, economic and environmental problems. I'm 78 so don't expect change in my remaining years. I hope younger people find a solution.

@mgifford Between 2013 and 2022 I embedded dozens of Tweets into my blog articles. Here's one example. tutormentor.blogspot.com/2019/

I don't do that any more.

Sadly, some of the Tweets I put in my blog articles no longer work because the authors deleted their accounts. That's a loss of information.

@eclectech

I enjoyed browsing your collections. You must have a lot of fun creating "silly images". I share your pain on the loss of Flash animation, too.

I put a link to your site on a page with "extra curricular" activities that could make learning more fun for students. Volunteers and teachers are always looking for inspiration.

@mgifford

I use Twitter less than I did two years ago. Yet, I still visit daily for a few minutes because I find more useful information being shared there than I find on the three Mastodon channels that I also visit daily.

I still connect on Twitter with people who I met in the past who have not yet moved over here.

I had about 4500 Twitter followers 2 years ago and now 3500. I have far fewer here.

In most sections of my website I post links to my blog, where you can dig deeper. This is a page about using the way Generals use them to win wars. tutormentorexchange.net/mappin

This is a page on the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC website that focuses on using maps to know where volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs are most needed, what programs already exist, and where new ones are needed. It also shows how maps can guide a distribution of resources to every high poverty area of cities like Chicago.
