Pulled apart some rocks in the Green River geologic formation this weekend, and sprung free some fossils of insects and leaves from their 50 million year entombment.

A dark fossil oak leaf in tan stone shows signs of decaying before it fell into the mud 50 million years ago.

A narrow leaf fossil with sawtooth margins and visible veins radiating from its stem and central rib shows darkly against the tan mudstone it was trapped in 50 or so million years ago.

Pressed into a tan mudstone, the golden brown body of a somewhat crushed beetle clearly shows linear ridges on its wing cases.

Warm brown tones in tan mudstone show the fossilized remains of a 50 million year old flying insect. The body shows segments. Head, legs and antenna are visible. One lace wing is nearly tucked behind the abdomen. The other is spread outward, and shows the internal veins of what may have been a clear wing.
