Here's my top five books read in 2025 :
- Some Strange Music Draws Me In by Griffin Hansbury
- The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin
- Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
- Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green
- Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Cawardine
(3 out of 5 of these books were read in book club, so thank you book club)

Special mention to :
- All Systems Red (and the rest of the Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells
- Story of a Heart by Dr Rachel Clarke
- The Wedding People by Alison Espach

I also became obsessed with Emily St John Mandel and her three latest novels (Station Eleven, The Glass Hotel & Sea of Tranquility) which I loved and highly recommend.

Finally, I had a lot of fun reading Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton for the first time. That book was surprisingly nerdy (and the deaths by dino surprisingly gory).

Three book covers : Some Strange Music Draws Me In, The Left Hand of Darkness and Last Chance to See

I made a venn diagram to help you understand Moiré patterns.

venn diagram. circles labeled "Angled lines" and "Different angled lines", they are filled with patterns of slightly different angled lines. the intersecting area is labeled Moire pattern and indeed has a moire pattern in it.

So… Not being active on Meta anymore: where would be a good place to find likeminded people for a yet-to-be-found-or-started co-housing project in Brussels?

through my job we get various LLM subscriptions, so every now and then I try them out because like everyone else I'm constantly getting gaslit by the world about these things.

my experience remains: it takes more time to fix and improve LLM code than to write it myself directly 🫩

Happy new year! During 2025 my all sky camera imaged the sky every 15 seconds, and this picture shows what happened in the sky. It shows the length of the night and day with the hourglass shape, the monthly lunar cycle with the diagonal bands, the elevation of the Sun at local noon, and lots of clouds.

The image shows the hourglass shape of the length of the day and night over the 365 days in 2025. Diagonal bands indicate when the Moon was up in the night sky.

Played Time Flies[1] with @mandooks today, highly recommend. You play as a fly that has a bucket list to complete. Reminiscent of Untitled Goose Game, but IMO better executed. Very funny, very cute, at times kinda sad 😄

YOUR CLAM YEAR IN REVIEW
- There are over ten thousand known species of bivalves and tens of thousands more undescribed. Please do your part and find a few species next year.
- Cultured bivalves alone help remove over 49,000 tons of nitrogen from our waterways every year, along with other pollutants (the contribution of wild bivalves is several times that). They charge us $0 for this service!
- We don't have data on how often you thanked clams, but it wouldn't hurt to do it more next year.

@padarom nice to hear 😄 my work is very much prototype-y, but I hope the stuff I share will at the very least inspire you for your own project! If you have questions, or if there's something you'd like to see discussed in the upcoming talk, let me know.

After 15 months of hard work, my dad has finished this impressive model of Minas Tirith! It is 1.4 m high and entirely hand-made out of wood. One of the most time-consuming parts was manually engraving the bricks on all walls and buildings, but this was key to properly convey the huge size of the city. Everything was painted by hand, adding some wear and tear. For a behind-the-scenes look at how he built this check out this video: youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Ywlc8ojjE

A model of a tall fortress city. Buildings are arranged in different circular levels, each smaller than the one below, like a wedding cake. All levels are crowded with lots of different buildings and towers of various sizes, giving the city a busy look. On the top level there's a palace and a tall spire. There's a huge flat rocky spur slicing the city in half. The buildings and rocks are mostly white. The model rests on a table, with some tools visible in the background.

Really liked this video on the great vowel shift that happened in England c. 1350–1600, comparing it to more recent/current vowel shifts. Also, I had never realized how much old English sounded like Dutch!
