Talks about stuff occasionally. I want to learn about Systems Programming, but am in the process of learning Python and Game Development with Unity.

Courts should interpret the 4th Amendment to bar the government from buying phone location data since “in order to acquire this data directly from a person or from their service provider, they would have to get a warrant,” EFF’s @Adam_D_Schwartz told FedScoop. fedscoop.com/ice-says-its-stop

Unbelievable.

Westjet won’t arrange transportation as part of the vacation package we paid them for… because my wife uses a wheelchair.

Aside from this being a violation of federal law, I’m deeply saddened that WestJet, too, now values cash over humanity.

Called it.

A scientist prophesies that by the year 2020 the inhabitants of the world will all be insane.
Some of us are inclined to think that today the world is one huge insane asylum, where the sane are kept in bondage by the insane.

When I was a smartass computer nerd in the 80s and 90s, an eternal theme was friends and family sheepishly asking me for tech support help, and me slowly, patiently explaining to them that computers aren't scary, they're actually predictable, they won't explode or erase your data (unless you really make an effort), and they operate by simple (if somewhat arcane) rules. Edit > Cut, then click, then Edit > Paste. Save As. Use tabs, not spaces. Stuff like that. Maybe not easy, but simple, or at least consistent and learnable.

But that's not true anymore.

User interfaces lag. Text lies. Buttons don't click. Buttons don't even look like buttons! Panels pop up and obscure your workspace and you can't move or remove them -- a tiny floating x and a few horizontal lines is all you get. Mobile and web apps lose your draft text, refresh at whim, silently swallow errors, mysteriously move shit around when you're not looking, hide menus, bury options, don't respect or don't remember your chosen settings. Doing the same thing gives different results. The carefully researched PARC principles of human-computer interaction -- feedback, discoverabilty, affordances, consistency, personalization -- all that fundamental Don Norman shit -- have been completely discarded.

My tech support calls now are about me sadly explaining there's nothing I can do. Computers suck now. They run on superstition, not science. It's a real tragedy for humanity and I have no idea how to fix it.

Damn Small Linux has returned:

DSL will now try to fit as many things as possible within 700 MB to keep older x86 machines usable, based on Debian distro antiX.
Among the new set of applications is BadWolf from @lanodan, a lightweight WebKit-based web browser.

Update:
Website was down, but has returned for now.

Remember Canonical's crowdfunding campaign for a @ubuntu phone that raised $12 million but failed?

Wouldn't it be nice to repeat this and crowdfund for a @gnome phone?

Would you buy such a phone?

I saw a video on Linux in Scratch and it now makes me wonder where else Linux could go. On a rocket ship to space? Your microwave? A keyboard?

Anyways, it’s be cool to see if Scratch Linux could use distributions like Mint, Debian, etc. I don’t think Scratch can take it. #linux #impossible #pondering #what

I found that with how I play Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, I am REQUIRED to have Evade Extender Lv 1 when playing Switch Axe since I am not great at positioning. Monsters become much more terrifying when I don’t have Evade Extender. But I think it can make me a better player by actually understanding a monster’s pattern. #monsterhunter

In the meantime, I plan on buying that Linux Programming textbook to keep because it is a great textbook. Alongside that book, I plan on grabbing some more books in the feature, like the legendary C Programming Manual and some more Wrox Press content. (The Wrox Press stuff is very cheap used! Granted, I don’t think getting a bad used book is likely since most books don’t really have any major marks or rips inside of them. But the risk is still there…)

…general text descriptions of things. Yes, things like freeCodeCamp are great resources with many courses on YouTube and a complete curriculum on their website that gets you certificates. But I can’t sit down and watch one of their courses, because I’ll get bored easily after an hour. I now favor the textbook style of learning since I can go at my own pace and if I forget anything, I can just go back and read the explanation for a concept again. (🧵2/3)

I got a programming book from my local library a week or two ago. I have to return it this Saturday. It’s basically a textbook that explains Linux Programming for Beginners. I have enjoyed my measly 87 pages I’ve read out of the 800+ inside. I love the book. It explains concepts in concise, simple detail, with plenty of code examples for you to mess around with and learn with. From my experience with this book, I believe I learn concept like programming through a textbook or… (🧵1/3)

@GL513 Ah yes, AI is unable to spell anything backwards. The technical reasoning being that most chat bots are trained through tokens, which are just entire words and not the individual letters of a word.

I recently got back into Minecraft and it’s been fun and nostalgic. My enjoyment of the game returned once I started playing again. But I’m a Bedrock player on Switch, so there are some trance issues such as me being unable to enter the Nether without getting hurt because the Nether generates before I am off the loading screen! Even though Bedrock is a different experience from Java, I still enjoy the game with the features it does have. For example, I like automatic crafting. #minecraft
