Self-Titled Summer | Wild Flag (2011, US)
Our final entry in this series is a spotlight on number 346 on The List, submitted by mfennvt. This Portland- and Washington D.C.-based indie rock band was the quartet of Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Rebecca Clay Cole, and Mary Timony, previously of bands such as Sleater-Kinney, Quasi, The Minders, Autoclave, and Helium. This s/t was their debut and ultimately only album, but each member has continued to make kick-ass music elsewhere, including the reformed Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, and Ex Hex.

Self-Titled Summer | Trio (1981, Germany)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 365 on The List, submitted by platenworm. The minimalist Neue Deutsche Welle trio called Trio was Stephan Remmler on lead vocals and keyboards, Gert “Kralle” Krawinkel on guitar and backing vocals, and Peter Behrens. This album is their debut, produced by Klaus Voormann (former bassist for Manfred Mann and Plastic Ono Band, among other things) and featuring the actual address and number for the band's shared home on the cover...a choice that would eventually lead to them moving out and breaking up. A song that got added to a reissue became a huge international hit, "Da Da Da (ich lieb' dich nicht du liebst mich nicht aha aha aha)", and has since appeared in a variety of places such as a 1997 VW ad and that piece of cinematic greatness, Bio-Dome.

Self-Titled Summer | Tracy Chapman (1988, US)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 821 on The List, submitted by shiawase. This singer-songwriter and her impeccable take on folk rock first hit the airwaves via demos she cut at her college radio station. After one of those demos was stolen from said radio station and sent to a music exec, Chapman was pretty much immediately signed to Elektra Records. This s/t is her fantastic debut with a loaded 1-2 punch of a beginning, "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" followed directly by "Fast Car", songs that are still landing an impact today.

Self-Titled Summer | Throwing Muses (1986, US)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 771 on The List, submitted by puffer. This alt rock/post-punk group originated in Rhode Island as a high school band formed by sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly. Fast forward a few years and line-up changes later, Throwing Muses became the first American band signed to British label 4AD, signed on the strength of their 1985 demo tape. The album we look at here is their (technically untitled) brilliant debut studio album. Following this album, Throwing Muses would become quite intertwined with (and, in a way, partially responsible for) the Pixies, though I'm sure you know a Pixies fan or two who doesn't know them. Continuing as a trio sans Donelly since 1992, the band has kept releasing albums and touring in-between Hersch's solo work. Earlier this year, Throwing Muses released their 11th studio album, Moonlight Concessions, and have an Australia/New Zealand tour coming up in December.

Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970, UK) (…or, The B2TB2TB Fedival)
Taking a break from our STS series, because today is the 55th anniversary of this iconic album (number 516 on The List, submitted by swordgeek). Instead of a regular spotlight though, I decided to do something slightly unhinged...
Since that final Sabbath/Ozzy "Back to the Beginning" send-off/charity concert, a few of us Fedizens had mused about how that show could’ve been better – less American-dude-centric, more genres, more local “Brummie” acts. So I asked Fedizens to suggest who they would've liked to see at the show (alive or dead), and to suggest Sabbath or Ozzy covers those bands could've played, for a 100% imaginary redo of that show, the Back to the Back to the Beginning Fedival. I got some duplicate suggestions - especially for songs for Paranoid - so rather than turning those suggestions down, I imagined/BBQ-sauce hallucinated a 6-stage set up (...in the shape of an inverted pentagram, obvs) so multiple bands could play in tandem. Also, there's, umm, magical headphones that allow festival users to create instant supergroups out of those tandem performances, if they'd like. Because, well, this is all fake, so why not. Also, a break from reality is pretty nice right now.
So, if you want to read a piece of madness and want to exercise your imagination muscle, the full blog post has a schedule with the bands/artists and covers we would like to have seen at B2TB (plus some extra goodies I dreamt up), complete with a narrative description of the fake event that has a few embedded phrases that may sound familiar to Sabbath fans. The alt text for the schedule image as well as my drawing of the pentagram stage set-up unfortunately didn't survive the journey from the blog platform to the Fediverse, and other bits of formatting in the post also got rather mangled, so I'd recommend viewing this baby directly on the 1001 Other Albums blog.
Btw, in lieu of an entrance fee to the fake festival, I've linked to a very real GoFundMe for a gender-affirming surgery for Kai, drummer of the most excellent Birmingham band Meatdripper, who was briefly featured in a clip shown during B2TB, and who you'll find on our B2TB2TB schedule at the A/Brummie Stage. It would be very metal if you could help them out, link is below as well.

Self-Titled Summer | Suzanne Vega (1985, US)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 820 on The List, submitted by shiawase. Though many people likely only know of this artist via DNA's dance remix of "Tom's Diner", this singer-songwriter was an important part of the folk music revival and Greenwich Village music scene boom of the early 80s. The album we look at here is Vega's debut, a collection of stories presented in a stripped-back neo-folk style. And Vega is still going strong! She just released her 10th studio album, Flying with Angels, and is currently touring Europe/UK until the end of the year.

Self-Titled Summer | Savage Garden (1997, Australia)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 1078 on The List, submitted by gavin57. This is the debut album from the "chic-a-cherry cola" flavoured pop duo, whose sudden and rather huge success unfortunately cut their time together as a band rather short. Give it a spin for a brief nostalgic return to simpler times...

Self-Titled Summer | Penguin Cafe Orchestra (1981, UK)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 279 on The List, submitted by friscolala. Inspired by a shellfish-induced hallucination composer and founder Simon Jeffes had, PCO's whimsical instrumental music is hard to classify but certainly not hard to listen to. Beginning as a quartet, this s/t, their 2nd studio album, sees the group as a 10-piece. When giving the album a spin, you might recognize something - a few of the tracks on this album would later be used in various places, including "Telephone and Rubber Band" in the Oliver Stone film Talk Radio and "Numbers 1-4" on a Mister Rogers' Neighborhood episode.

Self-Titled Summer | Paradise Lost (2005, UK)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 1077 on The List, submitted by gavin57. Initially a death-doom band, Paradise Lost is responsible for giving the genre of gothic metal its name via their 2nd album, Gothic (1991). The band later added in some electronica and rock elements and flirted with moving away from metal as a whole but, by the time we get to this, their 10th album, they had returned to the fold. These legends are still going strong, with their 17th album Ascension to be released in a couple weeks.

Self-Titled Summer | Minor Threat (1984, US)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 609 on The List, submitted by markwyner. This album - a compilation of two 7"s and a couple other songs - is essentially an iconic piece of history. It not only strongly influenced the underground hardcore scene in Washington D.C. and beyond and gave the straight edge scene both its name and creed, but it also solidified Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson's Dischord Records as an indie label that could actually make its DIY, no bullshit ideals work.

Self-Titled Summer | Margarita Witch Cult (2023, UK)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 800 on The List, submitted by raisedfist. Hailing from the birthplace of metal, Birmingham, England, Margarita Witch Cult are three disciples of the riff: Scott Abbott aka Screamin’ Scott Vincent (vocals/guitars), Jim Thing (bass/vocals), and George Casual (drums/vocals). This debut studio album showcases their excellent sludge-y doom/stoner metal/rock sound, and got enough attention to get them featured during the Back to the Beginning farewell concert for Black Sabbath and Ozzy. And that attention is rather well deserved, as they really crank it up a notch in their second album (Strung Out In Hell) just released earlier this month. These are ones to watch, metalheads!

Hey all, after our Self-Titled Summer series is finished at the end of September, I'm going to take about a month off from posting new 1001 Other Album spotlights, at least any written by me. If anyone fancies writing up a guest post to be published in October for any albums on The List that we haven't yet covered,* please let me know and I'd be happy to get that set up. 🤓
(*Once an album has been covered, the title will be bolded and a link to the blog feature added on this page: https://1001otheralbums.com/the-list/)
Self-Titled Summer | Kreisky (2007, Austria)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 104 on The List, submitted by Almoehi. This solid indie/noise rock quartet is essentially the side (or, parallel) project of frontman Franz Adrian Wenzl, aka Austrofred, aka "Austria's leading Freddie Mercury interpreter". Though this s/t album - Kreisky's first of soon-to-be seven - sounds nothing like Queen, after listening to it you're likely gonna want to catch up on what's going on in the Austrian music scene.

Self-Titled Summer | Knef (1970, Germany)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 906 on The List, submitted by arratoon. After racking up some 30ish film credits, German diva Hildegard Knef (b. 1925) started writing songs and recording albums, with her first released in 1963. This s/t (also released under the title Hildegard Knef) - a mix of chanson, jazz, psychedelic, and sweeping cinematic songs - was her seventh album.

Self-Titled Summer | KINO (КИНО) (1991, USSR)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 265 on The List, submitted by roboticowl. This new wave/post-punk group is regarded as a highly influential band in the Soviet (and then modern Russian) rock scene, even though the majority of their albums were distributed underground via magnitizdat (i.e., copying and recopying tapes privately and passing them onto friends to do the same), due to being unable to distribute commercially under the strict Soviet rules. While still riding the wave of the so-called "Kinomania" that spread even outside of the USSR (including the international hit "Blood Type" that would eventually end up on in a Grand Theft Auto game), the band headed into the studio to record this, their 7th studio album. When beloved frontman and songwriter (and, essentially, cult hero) Viktor Tsoi tragically died on August 15, 1990, the band completed the album with Tsoi's demos, and then broke up. The album was left untitled but fans would come to call it "The Black Album" after its cover.

Self-Titled Summer | Joan Jett (1980, US)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 345 on The List, submitted by mfennvt. This is the Godmother of Punk's kick-ass debut solo album, following the implosion of The Runaways and prior to the formation of the Blackhearts. Rejected by 23 major US labels, Jett released the album on her own label, and then reissued it just a few months later under the title of its opening banger of a track, Bad Reputation. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are still going strong, currently touring the US with Billy Idol until the end of September.

New idea: Let's make up a Fediverse fantasy music festival in honour of Black Sabbath, complete with our dream lineup and setlist.
Name 3 bands/artists (any genre, any language, alive or dead) you would've loved to see play at the "Back to the Beginning" farewell concert for Black Sabbath and Ozzy, PLUS what Sabbath or Ozzy song you would've wanted them to cover (reply here, DM, or email to johnmastodon@1001otheralbums.com). I'll arrange the sets and maybe even create bizarro supergroups for extra covers, and then post the fake setlist for the spotlight on Sabbath's Paranoid. Yeah?
And...go. 🤘
Submissions open until September 10, post to go up September 18.

Self-Titled Summer | Françoise Hardy (1971, France)
Our next spotlight on a Fedi-recommended self-titled album is on number 119 on The List, submitted by arratoon. By the time this album came out, Hardy was firmly ensconced as a key figure in France’s yé-yé phenomenon and as an international star, with nearly half of her 14 albums in other languages. Though Hardy had already begun to move away from the whole yé-yé sound and image, this s/t departs further, with most of the bossa nova-tinged music composed by the Brazilian guitarist known as Tuca. Both women were going through it at the time, and their collaboration created something beautiful and honest out of their pain.
