The Bright Sessions is an excellent piece of storytelling, taking an interesting idea (what if people have superpowers and went to therapy) and having the reader as a fly on the wall for deep conversations.

Using recordings of therapy sessions to understand main characters is a really interesting approach to a storytelling podcast. It allows for some exposition as the patient and therapist get to know each other, and kind of adds an element of mystery as there is undoubtedly a lot of information we don’t get. Added onto this, the people in therapy are learning how to control their superpowers. One of the reasons I like anthology podcasts is the stories are easier to keep track of than ongoing story arcs across dozens of episodes. With five seasons to the main story (and two spin-off series) that was a risk here, but it’s so well written it’s already clear and the threads all tie together.

For today's I've picked another of my favourites (also another horror podcast). In short, Shadows at the Door is an excellent show.

Shadows at the Door has a great combination of stories and friends talking. Each episode has a story, sometimes from the public domain or sometimes new pieces written for the podcast. After each story the hosts, Mark Nixon and David Ault (who is often the entire cast), chat about the story. Their chemistry is brilliant fun and they mean into it with their drunk ghost story episodes. The story-tellong is versatile and while it is an anthology podcast, some episodes feature a recurring character, Professor Troughton, and an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray spans three episodes. It's hard to choose favourites, but I especially enjoyed 'Slender Chances' and 'Gnothi Seaiton Audio Tour'. The first is a fun spin on Slenderman by Mark Nixon, and the latter by M Regan is a different approach to story telling by using a museum audio guide as a framing device.

Tiny Terrors is another fun podcast where the wrap around story is as important as the individual stories told each week.

Tiny Terrors involves a bunch of characters recording spooky stories from a story exchange from an earlier age of the internet. If it reminds you of The Magnus Archives that's not an accident. I didn't realise the character Donnie Sums was a spoof of Jonnie Sims until I heard who they got to voice the character.

Next for : The NoSleep Podcast. In short it is one of the best quality, most consistent, and most prolific podcasts. There's even an episode with Elijah Wood!

NoSleep is the quintessential horror podcast, originally drawing from the r/NoSleep Reddit forum and later shifting to stories created for the podcast. There must be more than 400 episodes and with usually multiple stories per episode that is a huge amount of people involved over the years. The podcast experiments with its format: the staple is a collection of stories ranging from 20 to 40 minutes, but you get flash fiction, special stories that span hours and several episodes, live performances, stories told on Zoom, a spin-off for kids (NoNap), and experimental stories under the umbrella of 'Sleepless Decompositions'. You find old school creepy pasta, techno horror, sci-fi, folk horror, ghost stories, and all sorts. All produced with an atmospheric score. One of the many things I especially like about NoSleep is they lift others up. They are diverse and they've given so many good podcast recommendations and encourage you to explore others' work.

For the fourth day of I've picked Improvised Star Trek. It's hilarious and good Trek. When I found it (via Hello From the Magic Tavern) it filled a gap between the new films and the release of the new TV series. It's my go to listen if I need a pick me up. theimprovisedstartrek.com/

The adventures of the USS Sisyphus and its crew is the funniest possible take on Star Trek. It name checks a lot of The Next Generation and The Original Series. The cast are a bunch of friends who know Star Trek inside out and the episodes are based on suggestions from the public. The outtakes and mini-episodes are just as fun as the full episodes because you get the cast corpsing. The production itself is brilliant and the music and sound effects make it feel like Star Trek. If you like Star Trek, and especially Lower Decks, or just fun in general then The Improvised Star Trek is an absolute blast. The only way it could be better is if Terry Matalas or Mike McMahan name dropped the USS Sisyphus and Captain Baxter in one of the new shows to make it canon. The bottom line is it's the best Star Trek podcast around and one of the funniest full stop.

As Bridgewater announced today that the second season will be released in January, it seems like a good candidate for day three of

Bridgewater is an excellent serialised supernatural thriller. It follows one person trying to get to the bottom of a mystery from their life, with various characters assisting along the way. If you recognise any of the impressive names involved with Bridgewater you'll already have an idea of how good the show is. Created by Aaron Mahnke and written by Lauren Shippen, it has a fantastic story and the cast perform it superbly. The episodes of season one are all 30 minutes or under, so just under four and a half hours of runtime. Definitely worth a (re-)listen before the new season is released in January.

For day two of I was going to choose something lighter, but I'm on a rail replacement bus so I'm not in the mood for that. Instead here's Knifepoint Horror, one of the best podcasts around.

I can't remember how I came across Knifepoint Horror just that it is one of the first podcasts I listened to. It is also one of the best out there, and sets the bar for horror fiction. Soren Narnia's stories are creepy and the delivery captivating. The first person narrative, usually starting with the narrator stating their name, draws me right in. Usually Soren relates the story on his own, though some more recent episodes have involved other voice actors. Some stories are a bit longer – like the recent 'colony', which was close to two hours – so I like to set aside time to properly listen. Bonus points for being under an open licence (CC BY NC ND doesn't count). Soren also has a YouTube channel for some extra content, and some of his dry humour.

is a nice idea I spotted on the bird site: leave reviews about your favourite audio dramas. I thought I'd start with PseudoPod. I love horror anthologies, so this one is right up my alley.

PseudoPod is a brilliant horror anthology podcast, with outstanding stories and an impressive back catalogue. Because it's so varied with different authors and voice actors, picking a favourite is hard but Trowel, Brush, Bones by Audrey Hollis (episode 779) really stood out. That's probably because it related to archaeology, but importantly it tells a story with important resonance in the real world. I especially like that after each story the host takes a few minutes to talk about the episode. It adds an extra dimension to the episode and helps you think about the story in a different way.
