Some photos from a sunset time walk some weeks ago. These were taken in an industrial estate around the Hannover-Linden port at the canal. I simply liked the golden glow on the interesting graffiti and it was also the first time that I realised that Mary Poppin’s famous long word has a different ending in German:

After fighting for several weeks with a nasty cold I was finally out for my first (short) cycle ride of 2025 (at -6°C). While beautiful it all looked a bit monotonous and you couldn’t see very far. When I was back home the sun came out for a fleeting moment and showed the frosty splendour in its whole glory. ❄️

Another afternoon in Celle.

This time we walked along the other river, the Fuhse. The path led us to the impressive new townhall (which used to be barracks) and to a beautiful park called Französischer Garten.

From there we made our way into the old town to have lunch and then after a little detour to the river Aller we went back to the Bomann museum that we weren’t able to finish two weeks ago.

Celle was an absolute delight again, even better in today’s sunshine, and the place was not heaving with people half as much as I had expected on a sunny Saturday.

From further away I had to look twice to notice the shape over the nice reflective surface in the evening sunshine.

The rest of the family joined me on an outing! A minor miracle!

At first we wanted to go on a walk in the Deister (a local hill range) but because of the bad weather we decided to check out Celle instead. That was definitely the right thing to do. For a start it‘s a popular place and with all the drizzle it was pretty empty and we could admire all the old houses (loads!!!) without too many people around. Then we found a nice Mexican restaurant to warm up in and after that we visited the Bomann Museum which is a great place to get lost in for hours. We didn’t manage to see everything but the entrance ticket is valid for four weeks so we already agreed on a date when we will return. 😁

On Tuesday I watched a rather long double barge manoeuvring the first part of it into a short sluice. At first I didn’t even notice how long the thing really was as I spotted it from behind and was grinning at the name of it, “Dick”, from Praha. I cycled past it, crossed the sluice at the road bridge and was now able to see “Dick-1”. I was thinking that was odd when I finally realised that there were actually two barges connected to each other. Dick was pushing Dick-1 into the sluice. Once in place, people got busy uncoupling the two boats and Dick came out backwards to make space for the sluice gates coming up from below. I stopped watching at that point but kept wondering whether Dick-1 had a functioning motor too to get out of the sluice at the other end… 🤔
