Santa Maddalena

The immensely picturesque village of Santa Maddalena in the beautiful Val di Funes (Villnöß Valley), with the mighty peaks of the Puez-Odle mountain group in the background. The evening sun cast a warm orange glow on the peaks.

While I hoped the trees would have shown more autumn colours when I was in the Dolomites during the last days of September and first days of October, it was still amazing to be there again.

Miniature Fungus

I went on a lovely stroll through a local woodland, soaking in the fresh early autumn air. It's officially still summer, but the temperature had dropped quite a bit overnight and with the leaves slowly colouring, it's quickly starting to feel like autumn. And I love it. My favourite season is about to start again.

Night Kayaking

These people were doing a night kayaking tour over the Spaarne river, that runs through my home town. When I saw them right in front of the iconic windmill in the city centre, I was happy I brought my camera and decided to shoot some pictures. Because of the movement of the kayaks, I needed to go up to ISO 3200 for this shot. Luckily, that's not a huge problem on full frame.

Yellow Stagshorn

These bright yellow fungi are among my favourite mushrooms. They are most often present in autumn, but the wet forests in the Vosges apparently provide just the right climate for them to grow there in summer. No complaints from me.

Burg Eltz

This imposing castle is situated beautifully in the woods and hills of the Eifel region in Germany. I decided to visit it after sunset, to see it go dark and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Milky Way above it. This proved difficult, as an 83% full moon behind the hill quite heavily outshone the stars lower in the sky. And because I only brought my 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses on vacation, I had no means – other than shooting a vertical panorama – to go any wider than this.

So here is my attempt at shooting the Milky Way above Burg Eltz. It wasn't a very successful attempt, unfortunately. But hey, at least I enjoyed my time here. It wasn't all that cold and I brought hot tea and cookies. This is a blend of two shots, by the way. One some time after sunset, just after civil blue hour had ended, and a second once astronomical blue hour was past and it was officially dark. Well, if it wasn't for that pesky moon, that is.

What do you think? Was this a success? Or was it merely a nice try, and do I need to go back some time?

Moselle

The beautiful Moselle valley is home to countless vineyards, where wines like the well known Riesling are made. Here you see the picturesque Hatzenport, a small town somewhere along the west bank of the river. I stayed here for a couple of days in the wonderful Rabennest, a small and cosy vacation apartment. On the last evening here, I decided to walk up the hill at the south end of the town, overlooking the river and the grapevines. I couldn't have asked for better conditions.

La Halte

I was in Paris the last few days, and appreciated the city a lot more than I thought I would. I had been there before, of course, being only two country borders and a four hour train ride away. But I didn't quite remember liking it so much. While obviously very busy, it's also a very nice city. Not the cleanest, but definitely alive. Very much so. So hey, here's to Paris.

This particular shot was blatantly inspired by Reinier Snijders, who can be found on both Flickr and Instagram. After all, plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery.

Noctilucent Clouds

Another shot from that Sunday night when there was a beautiful display of noctilucent clouds. I love it when these fleeting shapes of ice crystals, high up in the atmosphere, suddenly appear some time after sunset.

Noctilucent Clouds

I knew there would be a display of these night clouds last night. The high altitude activity had spiked during the day, so it was only a matter of time. Once blue hour had set in, I could see these clouds appear from my living room window in real time. First only ever so faintly, and then clearer and clearer. That's when I know I had to go outside. I'm glad I did.

Verona

The Italian city of love, as it is the city where supposedly the ultimately sad love story of Romeo and Juliet took place. It's a beautiful old town, especially at the iconic and over two millennia old Ponte Pietra (Stone Bridge), looking out over the Adige river. I was lucky with this colourful evening sky. The water level that year was very low, laying bare the rocks that cause the rapids in the river.

Flower Carpet

Once I entered this old patch of woods at the edge of my hometown, the wild garlic aroma was thick. In between the trees, the forest floor was a patched flower carpet of white and purplish blue. How I love this place in spring. Because of the large quantity of bluebells, I find myself here each year again.

Beech Forest

The forest floor in the beautiful Jasmund Nationalpark on Rügen, Germany's largest island, turns into a green and white carpet each spring. Millions of wood anemones then bloom between the trees in this vast beech forest. A magnificent sight.

Heather

When I drove past this field of heather, with a layer of fog in the valley and a sky above it that was starting to catch the colours of the imminent sunrise, I knew I had to stop. There wasn't a parking spot to be found anywhere, though. I turned around three times, until I finally decided that a not-so-very-official spot would have to do for the moment. Once I had gathered my gear and walked through the fence and onto the path through the field, the compositions practically presented themselves. The sky was exploding all around me, and the fog was still there. It was a wonderful early morning.

Lago di Landro

These coots seemed completely oblivious to the amazing scenery around them. Alpenglow, the orange-coloured first light of the day, falls on the towering mountains in the background, with the Cristallo massif on the left, with four peaks of over 3000 metres, of which Monte Cristallo is the highest, with a height of 3221 metres.

Baia del Vento

A rocky beach on the western shore of Lago di Garda, with beautiful views over Italy's largest lake. Here I was looking out over the San Fermo peninsula and Isola del Garda. While this is a private beach, meant for guests of the vacation homes and restaurants adjacent to it, it was all but deserted this early in the morning.

Golden Hour

Just after sunrise, this lake at the edge of Haarlem turned gold. When these geese came flying by, I was ready. With this shot, I think I managed to capture the early morning atmosphere quite well.

Seceda

My first time at the northern edge of the immensely beautiful Alpe di Siusi, at the famous Seceda, the sky was mostly blue. The second time, though, clouds were hanging between the peaks of Gran Fermeda (the mountain on the left) and Sas Rigais (the 'crown' in the middle). This looked far more interesting. Coupled with the purple flowers in the foreground, this is a view that you don't want to skip when you're here. The flowers are poisonous, by the way, so be careful.
