2015 24 Hours of Le Mans: Sometimes you get the shot through nothing more than luck.

Packed victory lane for Porsche's first victory with the 919 Hybrid, I was among the final photographers to get into the big pen, and that meant I was buried at the back among 100-plus other shooters, all scrambling to get photos of Nick, Earl, and Nico, who'd climbed onto the sidepod of their car to share in their first collective reaction to what they'd achieved.

All the others held their cameras high to try and get a clear frame of these three, and with no clear path to take the shots I wanted, I did the same--held my camera overhead--with a long lens, to boot--and fired away with no knowledge of whether I'd gotten them, the sky above, a building, or random nothingness.

By chance, and with seriously small odds in my favor, I happened to get them up close and in what felt like a supremely personal moment.

Genuine luck. Once folks got their shots, I moved forward and got some detail shots of the car, but the real surprise was lowering my camera and finding the raw emotion of what winning Le Mans felt like for Nick, Earl, and Nico.

Luck > Talent
