Dark Days and Bright Nights Associated with a Dose-Dependent Increase in Mortality

journal article:
Brighter nights and darker days predict higher mortality risk: A prospective analysis of personal light exposure in 88,000 individuals

I had recently posted that I wished there were more epidemiological studies that tracked light exposure / time outdoors:

Disrupting Health Care Using Deep Data and Remote Monitoring: Michael Snyder, Ph.D.

Lots of interesting points, esp.

- [5:28] avg. human body temp. is 97.5 deg. F ; variation in baseline make the definition of 'fever' problematic

- [37:35] blood oxygen drops during airplane flights
(I knew that before watching this video, but did not know a few decades ago when pregnant)

re: 5:40 Type of exercise for longevity

People usually play tennis outdoors. It would be nice to see 'time spent outdoors' and 'timing of outdoor light exposure' as a variables in more epidemiological studies. Outdoor time/natural sunlight exposure has an effect on circadian rhythm entrainment (morning exposure) and on the development of myopia in children (afternoon exposure). Perhaps it also has an effect on aging and age-related diseases. Perhaps fitness trackers could be modified to gather these data.

According to the study*, they 'Adjusted for age, sex, weekly volume of all LTPAs, smoking, education, income, drinking habits, and diabetes'. LTPA = leisure time physical activity. I would like to see an adjustment for time spent outdoors. I'm also wondering if playing tennis increases grip strength.

Of course, everything that turns up on search is about how tennis players can improve their grip strength - not the other way around.

re: supplements
there's some compelling epidemiological evidence on glucosamine and longevity; it is derived from shellfish, so not for people with shellfish allergy

The Dog Aging Project that aims at Helping Dogs Live Longer
youtu.be/YwmkGLqi018?si=rmOcMS

I was really disappointed about the NIH funding cut - this project is important for both dog and human health. As Dr Kaeberlein points out, it's also great in terms of public relations for geoscience and science in general.

~

It's an open science project - the data are available to qualified researchers.
